Should I visit Spain? |
I'm traveling to Portugal next year to visit my husband's family and I am thinking that while we are there we might as well go into Spain, but I'm a little reluctant because first of all, I'm from the USA but I'm of Hispanic heritage and unfortunately my Spanish is not 100% as English is my first language. I guess it's a bit embarrassing for me, especially since so many Latin Americans always give me a hard time about it. Anyhow, I would really love to experience Spain, should I just go? How do you think I'll be treated? Additional Details Thanks, everyone, I actually do speak enough to carry a good conversation, and I do understand just about everything I just need to have more confidence, sounds like I shouldn't worry too much, then, I can't wait to go, what part should I go to first? North or South? I've always wanted to go to Andalucia. |

Go to Spain! If you try to speak Spanish, make the effort, people will appreciate it. If you're not worried about it, they won't be. We're thinking of moving there because I loved it so much when i visited. Beautiful place, lovely people. If you're in Portugal, you should definitely go. |

Oh Spain is just wonderful! Great place for tourism! Don't let something like that stop you from visiting, that would be such a shame if you're so close by. Don't worry about their treatment as they are friendly people plus they would probably be formal with someone they don't know. It'll be none of their business. It's understandable if you're embarrassed but still, don't worry about it and visit Spain. You'll probably get some people talking to you in Spanish but if you'll clear it up and speak english then they'll probably laugh and tell you, you look similar. Go for it and enjoy Spain, I know I loved it.
Edit: That's great that you can carry a conversation in Spanish. I thought you only know the basics. Anyways, depending on how much time you can spend on your trip, I would say begin in Andalucia, it's amazing. Or maybe the capital. |

I'm half-Mexican and live in USA. I barely speak Spanish. I'm 20, and I'm now learning Spanish in college. I am going to Spain in 2010, or I plan on it. Idon't think it matters that you'll be thought less or more if you barely speak the language. Tourists come to Spain/Europe all the time, so it's understandable. It's a melting pot, really. Latin-Americans are different than Spaniards in a sense.
Go to Barcelona and Madrid! |

Yes. Don't worry about your language skills. They will love that you are trying, and will probably help you. In fact, I am surprised that you have been teased by anyone!
You will surely be greeted warmly and treated well by one and all. You can insure that by smiling and using basic manners...same expressions you use anywhere...Por favor, Gracias, PerdĂłneme, discĂşlpame, and con permiso...Hola, hasta luego (most common of the ways to say so long!)
Honestly, a little bit goes a long way, and if you are conversant, they will be sure to help you along...stay out of the major cities in the Costa del Sol. Nerja is supposed to be nice. Madrid, and the surrounding cities, Sevilla, Barcelona, Granada, all should be fine and friendly. (surely more, but those are places I have major experience with),
If you have a choice, AndalucĂa. Sevilla, Granada, and if you have time, CĂłrdoba. I could skip the Costa del Sol, and have, so far, but if you want some beach time, as I said, go to Nerja, or the Costa de la Luz, instead. Beaches are not warm until early Spring. Warmer than other places, yes, but not summer weather now! as some people expect. |
