Smoking habits in Spain? |
I'm going abroad in the spring to Granada, and I'm a light smoker now (but when I'm with my friends that smoke I find myself smoking a lot heavier)... I'm just curious if the image I have in my head of Europeans walking around with a cigarette constantly has any truth especially more recently. (i've read about restrictions in bars and things like that but i'm not sure if that has had an effect/reflects the attitudes of the people) |

There is a saying in Spain that a lot of people like to say they live by "Beber, Fumar, y Follar". According to them if you aren't doing all three, you aren't living life. A lot of Spanairds do smoke and heavily, but there are those who don't as well. In some bars and places there are "restrictions' but these are mostly ignored. Have fun, enjoy Granada (one of the most fabulous cities in Andalusia), and just remember the motto. |

There are also people who said that if you go to france, all they do is eat croissants... not true. You can smoke almost everywhere, it is true there are some places where its not allowed, but its weird. Most of spaniards dont walk, eat or live with a cigarette in their hands, but you will find it easier to smoke in a public place than here in the states.
People will not look at you funny because your smoking. Go to Spain, have a great time... and i hope one day you decide to quit... for your own health. |

I was in Granada a few months ago sitting in a cafe with my friends and there were people smoking. Smoking is not a big deal to the people in Spain, infact most restaurants and hotel lobbies have cigarette machines. |

Europeans walking around with a cigarette constantly??? That´s a topic.Of course you see people smoking in the street, but not too many.In most of the restaurants and bars it is completely forbidden to smoke, and so it is on the public transport and transport areas (stations etc...) and public buildings. Some bars allow people smoking. It is compulsory to have a sign at the entrance of the building.
The topic of the Spaniard smoking is just this,a topic. The same as the bulls and all the rest of it.It´s just an image people create of each country.Do all the Scottish men wear quilts in the street? |

I lived in Spain nearly 30 years ago, and you couldn't go ANYWHERE and not breathe other people's smoke. I was more tolerant of it, then, but someone who was not had a really hard time.
I went back last year, and I thought I would be dealing with much the same, but just as people in the US and other countries have been learning just how bad cigarettes are, and cutting down, andmore people have quit, and more places have outlawed smoking in public places, so have they in Spain...You find that most restaurants don't allow smoking in the whole place, there are designated areas, and sometimes they are set off or downstairs, though there were a lot of terrazas (outdoor cafés) where there were a lot of smokers. My 9 year old was constantly bothered by it, because we generally avoid places where people smoke, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by the way people adhered to the restrictions.
No, your image of people chain smoking and all, pretty old-fashioned. |
