Love Spain. Lived there. Would go back in a heartbeat if only it were feasible!
Spain has such a rich and varied culture, that it takes years of study or living there to really appreciate it.
Check some sites that tell the history. Read about the Moors, check out their influence on everything from the village that became the capital of the country, to the art, music, food, language and architecture!
Gypsies play a huge part in the history, as do the Jews, who settled there long before they were expelled from Judea, until they were expelled from Spain in 1492, and the Catholics, who dominated the culture for the next 500 years!
You could go to any two cities and get an entirely different view of what Spain is, but Barcelona, and Euskadi (the Basque Country) are especially unique.
When most people think of Spain they think of things that are really typical in AndalucĂa...the heat, Flamenco, bullfighting, tapas, serious about partying and Paella (which really comes from Valencia, but has its own flavor in Sevilla, too.)
Best time to go: Spring, but Semana Santa is best participated in with a bunch of locals. The tourist version is hardly worth the trouble! |
