Spain/Andalucia in January '09? |
Hi. My friens and I are going to Andalucia (Seville, Granada, Malaga and Cordoba) next Jan. Most of the time will be spent around the city centre, taking photos etc. However, I also would like to see the countryside/ villages/scenic views of Andalucia, away from the city centre. I wonder if there are coach tours that do a day trip to the countryside from any of the cities, preferably the one that can be booked online? |

If you are going to that area make sure you save at least one full day for a visit to the Alhambra Palace at Granada, there is a very good reason why it is one of the 7 Ancient Wonders of the World. It is Spain's most visited tourist destination but because of that it is well preserved and well organised. You have to book at least 24 hours in advance because they restrict visitor numbers daily.
Gibraltar is also well worth a visit, especially if you like history.
Take a look at the guide page on my website, it's for visitors to Calahonda near Marbella but it will give you several ideas.

The guide page is on the "Things to do" link.
Enjoy. |

Look for a coach tour of the Pueblos Blancos! You'll enjoy that! Start in Arcos de la Frontera, go as far as you want, or they'll take you. The route goes all the way to Ronda (a gorgeous hilltop town - worth it if you stay a day or two!)
Very scenic. Mountains, a big park (I thought it was a national park, but I can't find it on the list) all these little whitewashed villages. Just what you're looking for.
Bring warm layers. It will be chillier than you probably think. |

Granada and Cordoba will be cold. Seville is normally much warmer than the rest of Andalucia, and quite comfortable, though it may be pretty wet.Loads of indoor things to do though, you can never run out of things to do in Seville. Day or night.Look for Bar Peregil...fabulous. The owner is Pepe Peregil, a famous flamenco singer, and the locals use it as a pub for gigs. Just come in and play. Great jamming. He sometimes stops pouring a beer half way through and comes round the bar to sing. Had loads of great nights in there. Doesn't open till 9.30pm,and goes till early morning. It's a few minutes from Place de la Encarnation, the dead centre of the city. I camped beside the River Guadalquivir near the Triana bridge, last January,in a small bivvy, and it was warm enough. .Malaga the previous night was really cold. Camped in Seville in Feb the year before and was well warm enough. I like that river. Seville is fantastic.Been seven times now. From Malaga, try to visit Ronda, and see the gorge,it's amazing. There's a bus from Malaga, great ride up into the hills (the road goes over the same river about 20 times, very scenic route) or you can go from Cordoba on the bus as well and maybe use that as your route to Malaga. There's a bus from Malaga direct to Seville, about four a day if I remember right. Nice ride, around 2 1/2 hours, good scenery.but starts getting flat as you get closer to Seville. ... http://www.andalucia.com/ronda/home.htm ....For other villages see here.Click on the areas in the map at the bottom to see villages in each area. .. http://www.andalucia.com/villages/home.htm ... The Andalucia.com site has loads of details, just navigate all over it. Transport, events, national parks, all sorts.... http://www.andalucia.com/ ... In Malaga,Cortijo de Pepe is great. The 'j' is pronounced similar to 'k' but with more throatiness. Met some lovely people there, even got a visit to Morocco from it. There's quite a few Moroccans in Malaga. There's a really good backpacker at Picasso's Corner, very friendly, good standards, and convenient for the town. It was voted 2nd best in the world a few years back, and it's still very good. Surrounded by bars as well, all round the square, the Plaza de Merced, really lively, worth checking on. I've stayed there twice. http://www.european-hostels.net/picassos-corner-backpackers-hostel-4133.html |

Get a good guide book, rent a car and split the cost between you and your friends. |

Okay so you will be going to Seville ( don't miss the Cathedral..simply amazing..I'm agnostic!) Granada well every bar where you go to you will get a 'tapa' with ever glass of beer or wine...Cordoba..the Mezquita..beautiful..also Cordoba is famous in Spain for the wonderful patios with plants and flowers (not too many in January obviously).
Malaga well make sure to go the Plaza de la Merced and nearby Calle San Augustin (home to the Picasso musuem in a beautiful building in the pedestrian area) and have a few tapas at Cortijo de Pepe..probably one of the best tapa bars in Malaga!
Re seeing the countryside, believe me travelling between the four cities will give you a taste of what the countryside is like.
I am not a city person at all, but believe me I would happily spend 4 days in each of those cities. Simply soooooooo much history. Truly amazing places. Plaza de San Nicolas (Granada) is said to have one of the most stunning sunsets in the world with the Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada in the background. Stunning!!!!!
Oops forgot it will be very cold in Seville, Granada and Cordoba especially at night time! |
