Spain - Granada, Madrid, or Bilbao? |
I am planning to spend a summer studying abroad in Spain as a way to become more fluent in spanish and as a way to experience full immersion in a Spanish culture. I have narrowed it down to programs in these three cities (Granada, Madrid and Bilbao) and was wondering which would be the best for a student learning Spanish. I also am interested in many day trips throughout Spain and Europe while studying, so I am not sure which is the best in that regard. Thanks!! Additional Details Also, I believe I could study in Barcelona too. |

Bilbao would put you closer to France, and thus, the rest of Europe.
But, ummmm this is a personal thing, here, but I don't think there's all that much there once you've done the Guggenheim.
Madrid, well, that's the capital, and ideal if you are good with big cities, and all. You'll be in the center of the country, so pretty much everything is accessible from there, and, well, it WILL be cooler there than Granada.
But if what you want is true, beautiful, romantic Spain...Granada can't really be beat! It's one of my favorite cities, and, while my last trip, we had a really good time in Madrid, I still leave a little piece of my heart in Granada, always...I lived in Sevilla, and That's the closest choice you have to there...AndalucĂa. It's what you think of when you think of Spain...Olive groves, Gardens, Bulls, the Moorish influence, flamenco...it's THERE. Trust me. Everyone I have met who studied there loved it! You will, too! |

Listen to the people above. Bilbao is not that exciting a city and would be the first I would cross off.
Barcelona has everything. Except for Bilbao, it will be the only place with beaches. It's not as central to Spain, but is the best transportation hub to the rest of Europe. It's a very cosmopolitan city. The only downside to Barcelona is that it is more expensive than the other cities.
Madrid is the capitol and less international than Barcelona, so more Spanish. Still a good transportation hub, and central to Spain. But to me it just wasn't as fun as Barcelona (but I didn't stay as long).
Granada is a smaller city, but a great jumping off point to for Andalucia, a region of Spain that has a lot to see in terms of Moorish influences. Charming city and if it gets hot, there are mountains nearby. You won't see as much of Europe, but you're close to some fantastic parts of Spain. |

Look,I´m from Barcelona so I have to suggest this city as it´s fantastic.Plenty of culture, places to visit, beach and mountains close to it.We speak Catalan here as well, but that´s not an inconvinient for foreign students,as there´s special classes for them in Spanish unless you want them in Catalan (learning a bit of our language is always well appreciated haha). After all we are bilingual!!!
Madrid is also a good choice, plenty of culture as well, but no beaches...
Bilbao, nice choice as well.Very nice city and area. You´ll find they speak Euskera there as well (yeap, two languages, the same as Barcelona).
Granada? Beautiful city with also a lot of culture.A bit warmer,as it´s in the South.
If you feel like traveling to Europe,Barcelona and Bilbao are much better choices.Barcelona-France,a couple of hours on the car.More or less like Bilbao.
If you decide on Barcelona you won´t regret it.The Pyrenees are very close, the mountain of Montserrat as well (can´t miss it) and many many more places I could suggest.Feel free to email me if you need it.OK? :) |

Granada is fantastic if you want to study in Spain, it's a lively university town!!! and It's really really beautiful and genuine (the Alhambra palace, the Albayzin quartier -moorish style-) Yeah, it could be a right choice. |

I'd definitely say Madrid. There is so much to see and do there. Although Bilbao is closer to the rest of Europe, Madrid is the biggest city in Spain (it is the capital!) so trains can take you to many places from there. But then again, Madrid is so amazing that you might not even want to leave. I wouldn't chose Barcelona, as they speak Catalán, not Spanish. I wasn't big on Granada, and I think you would get bored there. Madrid is also in the center of Spain and trains can take to you to anywhere in the country from there.
Congratulations on choosing Spain! You won't regret whichever you chose, I'm sure. |
