Spain Questions, a few? |
Hi, I want to go to Spain soon, but I have a few questions. First of all, are the Islas Baleares a separate country from Spain? If so, is there a way that I can get there by boat from Valencia? If so, can anyone give me a company name that goes out there by boat? Also, in Barcelona, is Catalan the only language, or do they speak Castilian as well? In Valencia, do they only speak Catalan, or Castilian as well? Thanks in advance. |

The Islas Baleares are a part of Spain, and yes you can take a ferry to them from Valencia, there's a port there. Here's a website where you can research that more and buy tickets: http://www.balearia.com/
In Barcelona, they do speak Catalan, but most know how to speak Castilian, and some will just speak to you in English. In Valencia, they don't speak Catalan, they speak Castilian and Valenciano. But like I said with Barcelona, everyone knows Castilian.
Hope that helps |

The Baleares? SEPERATE country? Not really, but they almost might as well be...since they are so seperated. In fact, most of the regions of Spain tend to feel as if you have moved into a different country. There is a LOT of variation from one region to the next.
As for the dialects, SPANISH (Castellano) is the official language of the COUNTRY. And it is officially what everyone speaks. You will have no problem using Spanish anywhere. That said, street signs and the like are all in the local dialect. So, in Barcelona, you'll quickly figure out that Carrer is the same as calle, etc And if you spend enough time there, people will teach you the local language. Catalán is used in Catalunya, the Baleares, and something very close is used in Valencia...
Yes, you can get to the islands from Barcelona, and I believe, also from Valencia. You can do a search and find the information, routes, schedules, and ticket prices. From Barcelona, it's an overnight trip. |

In Barcelona, most people will understand "castellano," or Castilian Spanish... but the local newspapers, signs, etc., often appear in catalán. It would really impress people to learn a few phrases. ;) |

everyone has all ready said the known stuff
as for Language. CatalĂ and Castellano are both offical.
Everyone can speak Castellano.
but since... 2002/3?? the language policy has changed and now in schools ummm..s the post office... most of the signs in the stores are in CatalĂ .
But Castellano still has "equal" status in every region.
Depending on where you go in the Balear's everyone can speak English and German quite oftern French and Italy... and many people have started to learn Russian because there are lot's comming now
but you can't ask if you'll get a boat there... you haven't said where too... there are 3 major islands... |

1. The Balearics are part of Spain.
2. Ferries from Valencia: "www.aferry.co.uk/valencia-ferry" is in
English. Most Mallorca ferries go from Barcelona. I prefer to fly.
3: Everyone ( well all locals), in Barcelona speak Castillian Spanish.
4. Catalan is spoken in Valencia (They call it Valenciano to be
different) Everyone speaks Spanish. |
