I've heard a lot of people say Spain is a backwards country. Why is this?
Additional Details
I dunno, people just say it's more slow to develop as a country.

Yes as a country there is a lot of beaurcacy as they make laws that everyone knows they don't keep to, they talk the walk but never back it up
for instance here your not allowed to build anything without permission
otherwise it can be knocked down do they do it no
people are building mansions and nothing is done

Spain WAS a rather backwards country. About 40 years ago, when Franco was still alive. He liked it that way. Kept the country quite isolated from the rest of the world.

I lived there about 28 years ago. It was rather behind. I was back last year. Not anymore! I would say they are further industrialized than the US. And that is rather saying something. Of course, the US has slipped a bit under Bush.

VOTE!!!

It's a lovely country, from what I've seen not a bit backward!

Because it is different to the UK?
BAA owned by a Spanish company, Scottish Power owned by a Spanish company, Spanish banks between the biggest ones in the world (without problems!!), is this backwards?
Having the finest high speed trains, also from own production (www.talgo.es) and selling those to other countries, is this backwards?
The most liberal laws concerning same sex couples (marriage possible) bgackwards?
Dear, I think those people have been 40 years ago in Spain for the last time and they are backwards!

Spain runs rings around the UK! Health care, education and basic moral values are ten times better.Perhaps Spain has rather old-fashioned values as far as family and education are concerned, but I think is it's what's needed in the world at the moment - so many kids killing each other with no stable homes to go to!
As far as Hamilton is concerned, I think that had more to do with his father's dirty dealings than with racism.
Also, I think you'll find that fox hunting and men boxing are still rife in the UK and are just as barbaric, and as far as boxing is concerned, downright cruel. So which countries can be considered NOT-backwards??

In answer to "clueless" - Spain is not a backward country I have been here for 26 years...........its wasn't correct how they received Hamilton, but everybody is entitled to their opinion - the reason I think they booed him they DO NOT!!!! want Spanish cities turning into Leeds/Bradford/Birmingham/Luton, etc., etc., full of blacks/Asians etc, they are not as daft as the Brits paying out hand over fist to immigrants they try and send them back here when they catch up with the illegals and deport them which they are doing quite successfully.
I came here for this reason from Leicester, a city now where the majority of the population in black/asian.
I am NOT a RACIST EITHER!! may I say, my uncle is BLACK from Trinidad, a nicer guy you couln't wish to meet, but he never passes himself off as British, he is Trinidadian.......has worked all his life, was in the Air force................I rest my case!

They are building lots of new roads and highspeed railways, I never see this in Englnad. They built a superb facility at Valencia for the Americas cup and for a new F1 grand prix this year. They empty our bins EVERY day.
Yes they hang on to a lot of their old traditions but that is not a bad thing. They are moving forward very rapidly. Our local airport (Alicante) has just opened a new terminal.
Up in the mountain villages life still moves at a very slow pace and relies heavily on agriculture. It's a different world up there. But the country as a whole is modernising at a very rapid pace. They build new hospitals if they need them. The healthcare is first class. '
England is becoming a backward country while Spain are leading the way to prosperity.
I choose to live in Spain because it is a great place to live.

if spain is backwards so are several other countries! what exactly have you heard is backwards about it?

LEONÉS
I think we were a backwards country 30 years ago, when Dictator Franco ruled as I have read above.
Since he died in 1975, Spain has developed its economy, highways, airports, education, health care, society, industry ...in 20 years more than in a whole century.

Anyway we need to improve many things.
bye
