Spanish residency, I'm Irish and my boyfriend is Colombian (currently awaiting U.S citizenship)? |
I have a degree in English and he is an accountant ( fluent in Spanish) We are getting married soon, and want to return to Europe to live, Spain, because the weather is more favorable. We do not want to live in Ireland for three years in order for him to get Irish citizenship, we just want to live and work legally in Spain. Can he get E.U papers through marriage to me? Additional Details Currently residing in Florida. |

Getting married doesn't automatically allow your boyfriend a visa for Spain. Take look at the site below it may help.
Ihttp://www.kwintessential.co.uk/articles/article/Spain/Visa-regulations-for-Spain/193
I have lived in Spain with my family for 4 years and although we enjoy it ,it does have serious have a down side ,there are thousand of people out of work , property prices have risen to a ridicules figure. There are families that came here for a good life and now are stuck with no work , but they cant go back as they cant sell their houses ,their only option is to walk away from their beloved dream house in the sun and let the bank repossess it , and then they go back to the UK with nothing .This is happening to hundreds of families each month , many are borrowing the money for airfare just to get back with shattered dreams and they have lost everything .
What little work there is here is always given to the native Spanish , they definitely look after their own.
About the weather yes it is nice to wake up each day to lovely sunny weather but working in it is a different matter , its been about 38 deg every day for 2 months and we are longing for rain , something I never thought I would hear myself say.
If this hasnt put you off and you still want to come here be prepared for a long hard slog, and also think about starting your own business ,because even if you do find work with a Spanish company the pay is dreadful ,my friend is a lawyers clerk , he works 60 hours a week and he is about to lose his house because his mortgage is 600euros per mth and he earns 800 euros per mth , this is mostly the Brithish and Irish fault because we came to Spain with money which pushed house prices out of reach for the Spanish. Good luck what ever you decide.
EDIT
It has been like this since I have been and its getting worse because of the slump , you could go to Portugal but the work situation is worse there as it relies mainly on tourisim .Sorry if you think im trying to put you off im just telling it like it is . |

I have heard that work is difficult to find in Spain, these days.
Banshee has painted a grim picture. Things will certainly pick up. If it's sun you are looking for...I live in Colorado. We always could use a few good employees here. It's a lot cooler than Spain, but you could wait out the slump here, as soon as your boyfriend gets his citizenship, at least. And you? I assume you're a legal resident, too?
I'm beginning to think, even with the tightening down on illegals here, and the stricter laws, that the US is STILL the easiest country to emigrate to!
Anyway, good luck, but you might not want to go to Spain until the economy improves. |

He can get EU papers through marriage to you - but only once he has Irish citizenship. If he marries you he can live and work legally in Ireland, but nowhere else. So he can't live and work legally in Spain. You would probably need to work as an English teacher, but it is poorly paid. Your partner would more likely than not find a job illegally, but then that creates all types of problems once he becomes an overstayer, he won't be kicked out of the country, but if he leaves and tries to return he can be refused entry. So that rules out travel in the whole of the UK and EU as he will most likely be refused entry to any other country for being an overstayer. You could go to Portugal without trouble though as there is no border control with Spain. |
