Andalusia has a very large number of Great Brittan citizens. Almost everyone speaks English, so if you are going to Costa Del Sol, you won't need to speak Spanish.
Spain has 45 million Spanish People, and 10 million resident alien GB citizens. |

Lonely Planet has a very good basic guide to help out with languages in Spain. Also contains good information on accommodation, transport, food, things to do and places to see.
Spain has 4 official languages, Castellano, Catalan, Euskerra and Gallego. Castellano (known to English speakers as Spanish) is widely spoken.
The book also offers very interesting historical information.
The Muslim fortress in Malaga dates back to 1067!!! |

Byki.com download flashcards that you memorize when you have time.
Or you can copy them once downloaded, and use them whenever you are away from the computer.
It's mostly travel stuff. |

I have been going to Spain for 40 years and they seem to speak better English than we do! Most want to practise their English any way, just find a few words for the food and drink in case. Ask your hotel for a card, then if you need a taxi home, you just show the driver the card.
I take one of those little gadgets which translates, a bit like a calculator and it works fine.
The trick is to speak slowly and carefully. Be very polite and always start with. 'Excuse me, do you speak English'.
I have picked up enough Spanish over the years to get by if I have to but remember, you are spending money and they want it, they will communicate!
Enjoy and do not worry. |
