Speaking Spanish (Castillian) in Asturias? |
I'm visiting Oviedo soon and was wondering how used Spanish is in the area. The native language is Asturian, although I'm sure most people speak Spanish, do they converse amongst themselves in Spanish or Asturian - what are you most likely to hear on the streets?
Thanks |

Asturian is not a language. That would be a dialect. The only languages we have here are gallego, basque(euskara), catalán and of course castellano. In the whole country people speak castillian but in the basque country and some parts of Navarre, in galicia and cataluña they speak between them their language. But you would not have any problem in Asturias. |

They speak "Babel" and it doesn't have full offical language status, this means that it is only tought as a 2nd Language in School along with French and English.
In the Cities and Towns there will be some road signs (but they are alway's dual)
xD I won't argue for Babel to be a languge - I don't know it !! but from word's I've seen in it xD for example on the discription of products it look's like Portuguese (with-out the accents õ for example)
I think in Oviedo you'll almost only hear Castellano |

You know, no matter where you go in Spain, they speak Castellano. Because that is the official language that everything national is done, including school, in all of Spain. I doubt, anyway, that Asturian is all that different. After all, it isn't really a different language, though I know I'll be flamed for saying that...the definition of a language is that it is NOT mutually intelligible with the mother language. And Asturian is completely intelligible.
Even Gallego, the closest to a seperate language in that area, is still only considered a dialect. LINGUISTICALLY SPEAKING. |
