Surviving in Madrid? |
I want to go to Madrid next summer (about June/July '09) and spend two weeks to a month there. How much money do I need if I want to take part in the typical adolescent fun in Madrid (clubs, shopping, sight-seeing, eating out, ect.)? I'm prepared to start saving now since I'm working part time. Additional Details I'm fluent in Iberian Spanish, accent and everything, so that won't be a problem. |

Clubs? Lots.
I spent a month in Spain last year, and spent about $5000US for the month, so, you could expect much more...dollar is weaker, and we didn't do any clubs. It also depends how much you plan to spend shopping. |

I went to Madrid just this past spring and it was amazing. I spent a total of about $4,000 dollars there for almost 2 weeks. Like previously said, the dollar is weak there so even the smallest things will add up. But that also includes the fact I went to all the museums, special historical places, and eating out alot. It all depends on what you want to do to be honest.
And as for me, a young woman in Madrid, I did not sense that many dangerous things about it. I felt the people were friendly and the energy in thay city was amazing. It will definitly be worth the while! Have fun! |

Madrid is not cheap... so you need at least $50 per night for a CHEAP hotel room. I don't think $100 PER DAY would be out of line for a CHEAP vacation to Madrid... and if you don't speak Spanish and you have never been in Madrid and all you want to do is go to the teen stuff... then be aware than nightlife in Madrid can be very DANGEROUS for a teenager who can't speak Spanish and doesn't know their way around town.
You can take the Subway just about anywhere but that can be dangerous too. Madrid has a LOT of pick pockets and there are GANGS there, so don't do anything or go anywhere in Madrid that you wouldn't do or go to in New York City. |

The above estimates are quite good. Keep in mind that clubs are expensive in Madrid. There's often a 5, 10, even 25 Euro cover charge just to get in and the drinks are expensive too. You'll have to be 18 years old to get into most of the clubs.
Also include in your total how much it'll cost to fly round-trip to Madrid from the USA (if you're flying in from the USA, that is). NOW it costs about $1,200 USD. So NEXT summer it could possibly be much more, depending on gas prices by then.

I lived in Madrid for 10 months and now live in Valencia.
I think if you allowed a budget of 50 euros per day, for meals, metro tickets, drinks etc then it will all even out in the end. Some days you will spend more (if you go to a club like Pacha), some days you will spend less (if you go to little spanish bars). Alcoholic drink prices vary wildly, depending on how pijo the bar is.
Add accomodation costs and money for any shopping you want to do. Clothes are more reasonably priced in Spain than elsewhere in Europe. A good way to save money and meet new people to go partying with is to stay in a backpackers. In the centre of Madrid a dorm bed will cost around 20 euros per night.
Personally, I found Madrid to be very safe and the Metro is excellent. There are I couple of barrios that I would avoid at night, but that's the same in every city. Tourists are targeted by pickpockets, but if you are sensible with your belongings then you will not even notice them. |

I went to Madrid in February 2008 and budgeted $100 per day. I think this is really the minimum you could get away with. I suggest you stay in a hostel; you can find them for about $20 a night, depending on the Euro.
Also, watch your food money; seek out little food stands and you can really stretch your food budget. Also consider some picnics in the Retiro Park, a great way to spend and afternoon.
PLEASE be careful; the pickpockets, especially in the Metro trains, are real pros! Always travel in a group and pay attention to your surroundings, and you should be fine.
Madrid is a great city; I'm sure you will love it! The clubs are supposed to be really cool, but can be very expensive I understand. Also, with the Euro so strong right now, shopping is going to be expensive.
A lot of the great museums have free days, or free admission after a certain time; be sure to check this out to save a lot of money! |
