Traveling in Spain: Car vs. Rail? |
I have booked a trip to Spain this upcoming summer and was hoping to gain a bit of insight on the car versus rail debate. I have traveled through Europe before and know how great the rail system is, especially with one of the rail passes. My question is, with Spain as large of a country as it is, is it worthwhile to just rent a car and drive?
Itinerary would be: Barcelona to Valencia via train, and from there I thought I would maybe rent a car
Valencia to Granada
Granada to Sevilla
Sevilla to Cordoba
Cordoba to Madrid
If I do rent a car, is gas very expensive? How much would I expect to pay to fill up a compact car? Would parking be a hassle in Sevilla, Granada? I'm dropping the car off before I get into Madrid, so I'm assuming I avoided the worst parking scenario.
Thanks. Additional Details I will also have a GPS to avoid confusion (at least, I hope). So I guess the question would be gas and parking - if it's worth the price and hassle of renting a car, or if the train is the better way to go. |

I live in Spain. The roads here are some of the best in Europe now. However, driving in Sevilla and Granada will be a nightmare for those that don't know the cities. Madrid will be worse. Parking can be diabolical. Avoid a car in city centres if at all possible.
Gas is cheaper here than the rest of Europe. |

Gas...Not sure right now, but we paid about a Euro/liter two years ago. Didn't SEEM terribly exhorbitant...for Europe. You can search for average prices. Oh! We used Diesel, but the prices were really close.
Parking in Sevilla????? LOLOLOL! You can't even DRIVE in Sevilla, much less park! You should park on the outsides of major cities, and not even bother with the car in town. DO NOT try to drive in Madrid! CĂ³rdoba? The town is so small, you shouldn't even bother Granada? Not sure, myself. We just dropped the car at the train station and took a cab into town.
In fact, the only place it is even remotely necessary (on your route) to have one, would be to drive the Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos from Granada to Sevilla (it actually starts about halfway betw the two cities at Ronda, and runs through the park and around all these quaint little whitewashed towns to Arcos, then you pick up the superhighway for an hour to Sevilla).
And parking!!! it is EXHORBITANT!
Seriously! There isn't all that much need for a car in these cities...you can walk, take the bus, even pay for cabs. You are better off taking the train! Oh, and BE CAREFUL about the rail pass...they really aren't any deal if you are over 25. |

Our trains our very good, and if you book online, and in advance they can also be quite cheap
but, I'd say a Car will win against public transport everytime.
Taxis can be expensive, alway's ask an estimate BEFORE he take's you. that way... if they say 15€ but it cost's 30€ you'll know something's gone wrong ;)
But I'd reccomend a train an Taxi for your vacation because you're traveling very far, www.renfe.es. it would be eaiser too get a train and then busses and taxis too visit the locations you want.
I'm not sure if it will be eaiser or cheaper. but it might be a little less stress full trying to find parking spaces
but to be honest you should do what you would prefer, if you have the patience too be waiting for busses and looking for taxi's. or finding parking spaces but go where and when you want
edit... Gas/Petrol prices
if you buy cheap fuel from the Hypermarkets you're going to pay around 89cent a litre
but if you go to a branded gas garage you'll pay anything up to 1€ |
