Why don´t you try a eurorail deal? They offer x days around europe at reasonable prices or if you are using trains the whole time cheaper than the combined fares.
Into Spain from France there are only two rail lines. One passes through the Northern border at Bayonne / San Sebastian and the other for the Mediteranean coast. There is an overnight train Paris - Madrid and another from Nantes (if I remeber correctly) to Alicante passing through Barcelona and Valencia.
If the trains prove expensive then the Eurolines coach services are the cheapest around... or simply go Portsmouth Bilbao on the ferry and you are ready to explore Spain at your leisure. |

i would catch national express to Victoria then euro lines over on the ferry, (which is quite a good experience) to gar De nord and then a T.G.V down to monpelier. you can catch another train to spain from there. |

Of course there are, and you don't even need to get off the train and change cars, anymore.
The tracks are different gauge in Spain, and you used to have to change trains, but they have worked it out to where they change the undercarriage at the border.
I only crossed "through" the Pyranees at the coasts, but surely there are trains that go through the passes mid-country. |

For information on Spanish trains and where they go, I have a link to the train company in English. I hope this will give you some help and ideas when you get to Spain.
