Traveling to Spain in september? |
I'm thinking of going to Spain for my birthday in mid-late september, and I am curious as to what the weather will be like. I would like to split the week between Madrid and Barcelona, however I would also like to see a small, off the tourist grid village, possibly one with a beach. Only serious answers from those who have been there, preferably during that time of year. Thanks so much! |

I have been to Spain three times, my boyfriend is from there. The weather is average climate. I am from virginia and it is much like the weather here. Warm during the summer. warm and breezy in the fall and very cold during the winter. Id say for a september trip bring lots of jeans, any kind of shirts and maybe hoodies and sweaters. you wont need much more than that. The weather is typically the same in most of the regions in spain that you go to. |

In September it is normally still quite warm, and in the day you would probably not feel cold in sandals and a sun dress. In the mornings and evenings you will need to wrap up more.
However, just incase you are unlucky and there is a cold spell, rainstrom when you come (not usual but not imposible), you should be prepared with some warmer clothes & mac.
I don't know the area around Barcelona well, so won't try to make recomendations there.
However I can tell you, to the north of Madrid there is a mountain range, with many beautiful villages less than an hour away on the bus and without even leaving the Madrid province. It really is amazing that without even leaveing the province you can be in a tiny village with only one shop and goats wandering through the streets.
I would recommend the village of Manzanares el Real which can be reached by bus from La Plaza de Castilla. There is a castle you can visit, a plaza mayor representative of the villages of the sierra de madrid, and a very plestant walk along the river manzanares (which there is a crystal clear mountain stream, not the dirty river that flows through madrid) and on hot days you can take a picnic and bathe in the natural swimming pools - in fact in September the water will be at its warmest.
To travel from Madrid to barcelona, you can fly with Iberia or Vueling or take the high speed train "AVE".
I hope you have a great trip. |

September is beautiful in Southern Spain and normally sunny every day. The north is a lot cooler. |

I went in November of last year and the weather was around 60-70 for two weeks. Only two days did I have to wear a hoodie or some sort of zip up sweater. I'm guessing it would be a bit warmer for a trip in September. I'd be guessing 75-85.
Costa Del Sol was the only beach area that I got to see, and only at night did it get kinda chilly. Again that was in November. |

The weather in September is exceptional. Luckily you won't experience the dire heat of the warmer summer months, particularly late July and August. Madrid and Barcelona both share wonderful climates during the period in which you'll be visiting, however Madrid does tend to get hotter than Barcelona due to it's higher altitude and isolation from the sea. The average maximum temperature is 81ºF/27ºC, and the average minimum temperature is 65ºF/18ºC. (These are Barcelona averages, so I'm assuming Madrid's will be slightly higher).
Concerning non-tourist, beach-side villages, the most ideal towns are on the Northern Coast (between the cities of Santander and San Sebastián), however it will be rather difficult to find tourist-free towns in close proximity to Barcelona. I mention Barcelona because seeing as how you'll only be staying a week and the only other city you're visiting is Madrid, you're not going to want to travel a few hundred miles just to visit a beach-side town that's free of tourists.
Summer isn't officially over until the 21st of September, so that means beaches are still going to be populated by Northern Europeans hoping to get a tan. And the Costa Brava north-east of Barcelona is inundated with them. The beaches are excellent though, particularly in towns such as Caleya and Arenys de Mar which are only a 1/2 hours drive from Barcelona and easily accessible by train. Britons and Germans particularly frequent these towns. There's also Sitges which I'd recommend for you considering there aren't as many tourists as there are in the Costa Brava. It's a beautiful town roughly 50km south-east of Barcelona, accessible by train also with some excellent restaurants.
Hope this helps. Enjoy your trip! |

You probably won't broil in Madrid, but it may be warmer in Barcelona. Bring a light jacket or cardigan for the mornings.
Along the Mediterranean, I think you will be comfortable swimming and sunning yourself.
Off the grid...let's see...I love Segovia and Toledo, near Madrid...not exactly off the grid, but smaller and less crowded than the major cities.
Still not a beachy place, and somewhat touristy, but again, much less traveled, is Ronda, in the Málaga Province.
For a quieter beach, I´d go to Costa de la Luz, to the West of Cádiz. At least I hear it´s still uncrowded. Or you could go to Jerez de la Frontera, and tour the bodegas (sherry) and there´s beach there, too. |
