Traveling with money, how much is allowed? |
My mum and dad have bought a property in Spain in the middle of nowhere so there is no bank nearby for them to withdraw cash. They are now looking at taking the money out in England and traveling to Spain with it in the car with them. My question is - is there a legal amount of currency you can travel with? |

This site is a joke, why do people feel the need to misinform everyone?
Anyway, travelling from the UK there is no restriction on the amount of cash you carry. However if it exceeds £10,000 you may be asked questions about it by customs and or police, a teller receipt from the bank and some proof you are buying a house will suffice to prove the money's legality.
No matter how you go to Spain, there is very little chance you'll be stopped by any police or customs, so you really have nothing to worry about. Well, except carrying a large amount in cash and being robbed! |

There are legal amounts that one can take into certain countries. I don't know what Spain's is but I would contact an embassy to find out. I would also buy travellers cheques as if lost, they can be refunded. |

The import and export of local currency is unlimited, but the export of amounts exceeding €6,010 (in any currency) per person per journey must be declared.
The export of cash notes and bearers-cheques, in any currency, exceeding €3,050 per person per journey must also be declared.
So you can bring anything in, it's only when taking it out of the country that restrictions apply. |

Yes, I believe it is $50K. What they need to do is to wire the money from England to a bank in Spain (Like Banco de Bilbao), where they will hold the funds for them. It's never a good idea to travel with large amounts of cash, or to do a cash transaction - especially with the purchase of property. Better to have a cashier's check from a bank. Even if the bank is nowhere near the property, there is undoubtedly a bank in Spain that is on the way. |
