Traveller's Cheques in Spain? |
This is as much a warning as a question! I returned from Spain yesterday and found it impossible to change traveller's cheques. Due to the amount of counterfeit cheques being passed, banks will no longer accept them. Also problems changing Sterling cash into Euros - only Bureaux de Change seem to accept cash exchanges. Banks will do so if you either have an account with them or actually live in Spain.
Has anyone come across this problem recently?? |

This is common world-wide. And very few places in Europe, not just Spain, will change or cash Traveller's Cheques for the simple reason that ATMs are everywhere and offer a more competitive exchange rate and that's what most people use. Traveller's cheques are good as a safeguard in case you lose an ATM card, but many banks will now issue a spare card when you travel, and you use credit cards for large purchases.
As for exchanging cash, well again it's just not necessary these days. Maybe change a few pounds to Euros at the airport, but ATMs are available there too.
I've been travelling to Europe regularly from Australia in recent years, and took Traveller's Cheques the first time, only to find they're just about obsolete. |

For the last decade or so, when I travel I've used ATMs -- automatic teller machines -- in the country I'm visiting. The last time I used travellers' checks, in 2005, I used American Express and changed them at the American Express office in Rome. |

I haven't used travellers cheques for years. As others have previously stated it's better to use the ATM machines.
I honestly thought travellers cheques had been phased out?
Next time you go to Spain, open an account with the Nationwide - you can use their Flex account card free of charge in Spain - it's the safer option! |

I haven't took travellers cheques on a holiday for a good few years because of this and also use ATMs to get money when needed, it's much easier and less hassle. |

Actually, I didn't exactly run into this...my bank advised against buying Traveler's checks before I left...for exactly the reason that you give.
They told me that the best way to carry money was either cash, or using credit cards/debit cards, and ATM cards to get cash.
You check on your cards, to be sure you are paying the lowest fees...they run 1 - 3% or so, cards vary. You don't draw cash from your credit cards...they charge extra fees and higher interest. Keep copies of all the information on the cards, including phone numbers to call in case they are stolen, and keep with the copies of your passports. |

"Traveller's Checques"... my... how NINETEEN FIFTIES... Um... NOBODY uses Traveller's cheques any longer... which is probably why you have a hard time cashing them... and you have NEVER been able to turn in CHANGE from one country into a bank of another country if you don't have an account in that bank..
Is there some reason you can't use CREDIT CARDS like everyone else? |
