Trip to Barcelona, Spain?

I was wondering about the best possible way to get to France from Barcelona. Is it really as close as it looks on the map? Any suggestions on places to see along the way, either in Spain or France? Anything I should know about crossing the border? Would it be better to take a train, bus, or rent a car? And what is the best way financially? We are only going to be in Barcelona for about 5 days and I wanted to see a little of France, would one day cover it? I don't want to see anything major, just something in France, for I have never been. Also we are traveling around Christmas time. Also what are somethings to do in Barcelona?

You could get to France in a couple hours by train or car, but I don't think it would be worth it. The Pyrenees will be snowed in (unless you like skiing), and the French Mediterranean will be chilly. And with only 5 days there's too much to do in and around Barca. I would stay there with maybe one day trip to Figueras or Tarragona. Here are some things to do (taken from my previous posts, see http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AstL9NDzgAP3d7GUiVIN5Ljsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20081024150154AA2Gw8p&show=7#profile-info-0Ft8itFiaa, etc., for more people's thoughts):

Museums: Museu Picasso, Fundacio Miro, Museu de la Ciutat (City Museum). The 2nd is a little out of the in the Parc Montjuic, but is the best collection of Miro's work anywhere.

Architecture: Sagrada Familia, Parc Guell, Casa Mila (aka La Pedrera), Casa Batllo, in that order. All these are Gaudi buildings, the first two are must-see, and the 3rd almost is. You can walk down the street Passeig de Gracia from Casa Mila to at least see the outside of Casa Batllo as well as other Art Noveau Buildings. A short hike up to the Tres Creus in Parc Guell gives you nice views of the city and helps orient you.

Music: Palau de Musica. Another Art Noveau gem. Try to catch a concert there (make sure its in the main hall) over the tour. It's gorgeous and the music is great. Buy tickets online.

restaurants: Les Quinze Nits (15 Nights) in Placa Real - get there about 20-30 minutes before opening as they don't take reservations. If you can't get in there, try La Fonda (I hear it's owned by the same people). Both excellent Catalan food at very reasonable prices.

Also try Origen 99.9, a local chain, but good authentic Catalan food. Get there a little before opening because they don't take reservations and often only do one sitting. http://www.origen99.com/web/

Tapas Gaudi of La Rambla de Gaudi (not Las Ramblas, but near Sagrada Familia) is a good tapas place.

nightlife: Clubs everywhere, for a slightly more relaxed and less touristy experience try Placa del Sol or La Cervesera Artesana (http://www.lacervesera.net/eng/indexeng.... best beer in Barcelona, not that that says a lot. Drink wine everywhere else - reds from La Rioja, whites and Cavas from Penedes).

Other: La Boqueria market, Las Ramblas, Barri Gotic, including Cathedral and Santa Maria del Mar. Just wander that area. Sitges for nearby beaches, though the ones in the city are decent if you don't have the time to get down there.

Day trips: Montserrat for the mountain monastery and hiking (and the caves that inspired the Sagrada Familia if you're lucky), Sitges for beaches (Cadaques is better but farther), Tarragona for Roman ruins (and more beaches). Figueras for the Dali museum.

Barcelona is close to the French border but France is a big country and it could be really far away from where you are in France.
The journey by car crossing France into Barcelona is a very beautiful one. I would definitely recommend a car.
The last town in France before crossing into Spain is called Perpignan. It is not an exciting place but it's very quaint.
Lyon is a good place to visit nearish to Spain and it could be on your way depending where your starting point is.
In Barcelona, you have to go and see the Parque GĂĽell. It is a park on the outskirts designed by GaudĂ, the eclectic Spanish architect/artist.
You also have to see his as yet incomplete Cathedral " La Sagrada Familia".
You need to have a coffee on Las Ramblas and just watch all the eclectic mix of people go by and all the human statues.

You get on a train, and you will be there in about an hour and a half. Yeah. It's pretty close, and it won't cost more than about 15€.

All things considered, I wouldn't recommend (for your schedule) to go for more than, like, to have coffee, and be able to say you were in France. You COULD go as far as Perpignan or even Carcassonne on a day trip.
