Valencia, Spain?

I am a 17 year old and I am thinking of spending a month in Valencia, Spain this coming July. I speak a good amount of spanish and hope to improve it by living there. Can anyone who has either lived or traveled there tell me if it would be a fun place for me to stay? Is it a livley place for young people? Tell me anything you know including if you think its a bad idea for me to travel there! thanks.

Hey, I am actually from there. I was born in Valencia and lived there for 24 years :) so I can tell you a lot from it.
Valencia is awesome. It's a beautiful and charming town. It's full of young people, and a lot of international students (it is a favorite destination among ERASMUS students from all over Europe), so you'll find English speaking people if you go to the right places.
I love Barrio del Carmen, it's the medieval part of the town. It's full of pubs, and it's really cool. Check out the main pubs and discos along Calle Caballeros. Johnny Maracas is a classic. And I totally love Calcatta, it's at the end of a narrow street that's perpendicular to Calle Caballeros. I believe it's called calle Corretgeria, but I'm not positive.
You have to take a LONG walk in the Jardines del Turia. It is the old riverbed (Turia is the name of the river), basically they diverted the river because there were lots of flood problems, so now the town is crossed by miles and miles of an awesome garden full of really cool places. Among them, you have to see Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias. The architecture will knock you off your feet.
Other than that, enjoy just walking down the streets. As all big towns (with the metropolitan area, Valencia has some good 1.5 million of inhabitants, the official data is less than a million, for it only refers to the city itself. Believe me: it is big) it has some places you do not want to visit; particularly Barrio de la Coma, or the Harbour zone --although it has improved a lot lately).
Oh, if you dig soccer, you have to see Valencia FC in Mestalla (they're building a new stadium, so get the atmosphere of the old stadium as much as you can).
Also, travel around the province. Valencia has nice beaches, but if you travel a little bit (train is a great option) to some of the surrounding towns (Gandia, Cullera, Altea...just to name three) you'll find impressive beaches, and a more mediterranean flavor (you know, white houses, blue skies, narrow streets...)
I dunno, man, there's so much I could tell you about Valencia...just enjoy yourself, be open, be nice, be curious about the history and the tradition of the place, and I'm sure you'll have the best month in your life.

The city of Valencia and the surrounding area will attract millions of visitors from around the world given that the city of Valencia has been chosen to host America's Cup in 2007. See http://www.spain4uk.co.uk/places/valencia.htm for more details

I have been there twice and plan to go there again this year. I love Valencia!! People are so lively+lovely+friendly!! Fun nightlife and nice beaches. The weather will be very nice in July, lucky you! I miss blue sky there and, of course, Paella :P
