We want to drive from Santander to Almoradi (nr Alicante), any advice pls on the toll roads, best route etc? |
Hi
Other half doesnt like flying, we have the use of an appartmnet in Almoradi this June, half an hour from Alicante/Murcia so we thought of getting the ferry to Santander and then driving down, with a stopover to break up the driving. Would love to hear from others who have done this any tips/advice and how much the toll roads will cost, and how easy the journey is, many thanks |

You can avoid the toll roads if you want, then you could drive from Santander to Madrid, stop overnight there, then drive from Madrid to Valencia. This route is supposed to take 10 hours 40 minutes, but I suspect it will take longer due to the traffic in Madrid.
The toll roads will take you through Zaragoza, and that would be a good place to stop as it is roughly half way. I don't think there is a toll from Santander to Zaragoza, but from Zaragoza to Alicante there is around 10 euros in tolls. This was is supposed to take 10 hours 20 mins, depending on traffic, but it means driving an extra 100 kms on the tollways.
I would suggest purchasing a GPS, Tom tom or similar, because driving through cities is pretty difficult at times, and I think sat nav would save a lot of drama. |

Personally, if you really don't want to fly...I'd suggest taking the train...but if you feel the need to drive, you can find information using mapquest, or just search a road map. They mark the toll roads very clearly, both there and on the roads, themselves...if there is a P in the road designation, it's a toll road, and you can travel faster. If there is an A, you can travel almost as fast, and the roads are quite good. |

The best route is Santander-Burgos-Madrid-Albacete-Alicant...
Completely toll-free route.
From Santander you can take either the N-623 (road) from Santander to Burgos (straight route to Burgos) OR the A-67 (Motorway, Autovia Cantabria-Meseta) and then the A-231 (Motorway, Autovia del Camino de Santiago) to Burgos. I recommend the latter, the motorways, cos you'll be crossing the Cantabric range in any case, pretty high mountains, and you don't to want to have, perhaps, 5 slow moving trucks ahead of you all the way to Burgos.
Whatever the case, once in Burgos, take the A-1(motorway) to Madrid, DON'T go through Madrid City (you can spend HOURS stuck in a traffic jam), so take the M-50 (motorway) to by-pass Madrid, then the A-3 (motorway) and A-31(motorway) to Alicante. Once approaching Alicante, there are several possibilities to get to Almoradi. Looks like taking the A-7 is the best option. Check it yourself.
You could also go via Zaragoza, but it's gonna take you about the same time or more and you'll be paying tolls. Pointless. |

When leaving Santander take the A8 in the direction of Bilbao. Close to Bilbao take the A68 to Burgos. This way is longer but it is a lot quicker than taking the direct route. When you get to Burgos take the AP1 to Madrid. Then follow the overhead signs for the A·3. That will take you to a motorway in the direction of Albacete, then the A31 to Alicante.
It is a very good route. The roads are very good. Madrid can be busy but the signs take you well away from the centre of Madrid. I drove through Madrid at 6pm on the ring road and encountered no traffic hold-ups.
It's a tiring drive to do in one day. We did Málaga in a day which is further than Alicante. It took us thirteen hours. Just make sure you have a 15 minute break every two hours.
