As a Spanish citizen I must say it all deppends on the part of Spain we are talking about.Spain is big and has got different languages and cultures.
Sangria and Jerez would be tipical from the south of Spain for instance.
Wine is one of the most popular though, much more than sangria.
There´s another drink called Tinto de Verano,in between wine and sangria,(to make you an idea) which is also nice.
In Catalonia, north east, wine, cava (similar to champagne) and also Moscatell (sweet wkind of wine that goes with desserts).
North of Spain Orujo, which is almost 90% alcohol!!!! This one kills you!!!!!Nice...very nice though
I could tell you quite a few more....!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope it answered your question!!!!

Yes, it's wine. Real Spaniards don't drink Sangria. I have been to Spain three times (never to the Costa del Sol or the other Brit hangouts) and wine to real Spanish restaurants where real Spaniards go, Sangria was NEVER on the menu!

I've had Orujo in Asturias this is like Grappa but made from apples. THAT is a drink!

Wine is Spain's National drink. All the by products everyone mentions are all a wine based drink. Sherry which can only be called Sherry if it comes from the city of Jerez de la Frontera. Sherry is a fortified wine. Sangria is red wine and various other drinks mixed, the same as a cocktail. It is very popular with the tourists. The locals often drink tinto verano (summer wine). That is red wine and a light lemonade mixed. That is excellent on a hot day as it is lower in alcohol.

EDit; Someone mentioned San Miguel. That is a beer that is very popular with the tourists. The locals never drink that. They mostly drink Cruzcampo or Mahou. San Miguel originates from the Phillipines and is not a Spanish beer.

Sangria? Wishful thinking of some British tourists, that is! I have been working and living in Spain, I speak the language, I think I understand the culture of the Spaniards. But never would I see a Spaniard say that Sangria is his traditional drink. Some even don't know what it is.

It's either Jerez (for the non literate: Sherry) or simply (red) wine, tinto in Spanish. ¿Estas de accuerdo, Anna?

Kyo-the-cat
Sherry - at least around Jerez.

SangrĂa is what most foreigners think of, but it's usually just really cheap wine with fruit and sugar added, sometimes other liqueurs. If you can't get good stuff, drink the sherry. Fino is wonderful, or just tinto. They don't drink much white wine there. And everyone drinks beer.

As several knowledgeable people have already noted, REAL Spaniards don't drink SangrĂa...it's purely for the tourists, and as I said, it's rarely all that good.

Errrrr......Sherry?

myspaindelight
Definitely wine and beer, not sangria

I agree with Conoco. But everybody has forgotten the "Kalimotxo" or "Calimocho", a very disgusting drink made by wine and coke very popular among young Spanish people.

And I'm a Spaniard from the North of Spain, and even if we don't drink sangria all the time, we prepare it in summer when friends come to visit or when we go to the bull-fight. Sangria made at home can be really good.

You can't simply say one traditional drink as Spain is made up of various regions all of which are quite different.
As many people have said only " foreigners " drink sangria. I've lived in Jerez, Spain for 13 years and never touched nor ever been offered the stuff.
Take your pick from one of the following but again each is popular according to the season of the year and the region you find yourself in.

Beer ( brands)
Cruzcampo,
San Miguel,
Mahou,
Estrella Damm or Gallicia).
Alhambra

Sherry / rebujito ( sherry mixed with 7up) in fair!
Big favourite where I live (both sweet and dry sherry!)

Red wine ( rioja)
Tinto de verano

Don't forget they are very fond of their cubatos!!!!!!!!
At least here in the south they are.
