The Centro, but it is bound to be expensive.

Or you could find a place near whatever school you are going to be studying in.

DonÂ´t worry about trying to find something in the center. Its overpriced and not worth it noise wise. Maybe you can get lucky with a room in La Latina, Retiro, Goya or Fuencarral.... not easy though.

Find something a little further out but next to the Metro and youÂ´ll be in the center in no time. ThereÂ´ll also be bars there as well, if thereÂ´s one thing madrid doesnÂ´t lack its bars!!!

What's "the best neighborhood" for students in Madrid? Hmmm.. You'll have to first define "Best for students". Is this the cheapest? The coolest? The place where more students hang out?

The truth is, in Madrid spain, ANY neighborhood will have cafes and bars - without fail. Even the lowest-end, cheapest, worst areas of Madrid have cafes and bars. But so do the highest-end, most-expensive, and nicest neighborhoods. And every neighborhood in between.

I guess it also depends on WHERE in Madrid you'll be studying. Are you studying in Madrid Complutense University, for example? If so, you may consider someplace around Moncloa to be within walking distance to your classes, you'll be around more students there, and you'll have your cafes and bars. But don't think that Moncloa is the Students' Neighborhood because it's not. It's a normal neighborhood with all ages of people. Most students live at home all over Madrid so you won't find lots of student dormitories or residences because few exist.

Some students and young people choose to share flats in the La Latina district and adjacent Lavapies neighborhood of Madrid. Although rather far from Complutense, these places tend to be a little cheaper when shared and the area is very "Hippy-ish", mixed ethnicities, somewhat bohemian, and few houses with elevators or air conditioning. MANY Asians and Middle Eastern people have moved into these neighborhoods in the last few years too. It's almost a little China Town/Open Bazaar now. The buildings are generally in worse condition too and the area not as clean/safe as others but they are cheaper. From here you can take the metro to wherever you want in Madrid. I really like these areas of Madrid for something "Fresh" yet old.

The Chueca neighborhood of Madrid is VERY COOL, somewhat chic, stylish, rather gay, and now - because of these many factors - also rather expensive. But it's a young, hip, happenin' place to be in Madrid. I doubt many students live there though but Chueca does have their share of cafes and bars.

Spain is a country of very sociable people...
You will find bars or cafÃ©s on overy other corner in most cities, towns and neighbourhoods.
The best thing is to find out which campus you will be studying at, and look for a good neighbourhood close by.
If you already know which one you will be studying at, edit your question by adding the name... or contact me via YA!...I could give you a more precise answer after that.

The coolest area in my opinion is MalasaÃ±a. It's full of bars, cafes, restaurants, shops and there a loads of young people. It also in my opinion is the place for the best nightlife in Madrid - it's positively rocking. You would need to look for a flat near Tribunal, Bilbao or Alonso Martinez metro stops.

I agree with someone else who said La Latina, but I wouldn't live in Lavapies. I would go to Lavapies to drink and eat, but the streets are dodgy with drug dealers on every corner. If you are not gay, then Chueca is too gay for you!

I would also look around Quevedo, Iglesias and Rios Rosas.
