Very much Catholic - some 95%, though these days some are are not practising Catholic. The Muslim - Moorish - influence is also very strong and can be seen in many old churches and othe buildings. Spain has a heavy history from the middle ages of trying to influence the rest of the world to become Catholic. At one time, Spain also had a Pope sharing power with Rome. Much of the gold / silver etc. taken from South America went to pay for these "Holy Wars". Example, Spanish Fleets sailing against Elizibethan England. Then you had the Spanish Inquisition to underline the fiece Catholic conversion attempts in the world.

Is it really still as strongly Catholic as blessed says? I was under the impression that since it is no longer mandated that everyone be Catholic, that number had dropped further.
still, there is no specific religion any longer. It is legal to follow whatever you want to, and there are many different denomintations represented.
