I have visited some of the major cities, Seville, Madrid, Granada and Zaragoza, all are wonderful and I think all of the other main cities are worthy of visits too. I hear Cordoba and Barcelona are musts.
Beaches in my opinion are best on the Costa Blanca, lovely white sand. The Costa del Sol beaches are not soo good.
Tapas is plentiful and great, these are little snacks you can order just to tide you over till the next main meal. In Andalucia, tapas is generally given free everytime you buy a drink.
Fish dishes are very popular as are fresh salads.
It's a wonderful country.

Spanish is a phonetic language and the vowels sounds are always the same and every letter is pronounced.
Lots of words are similar to English, similar itself being one of them!!! Possible is written posible and pronounced pos ee bl e (the e as in egg)
The letter A is always pronounced as in cat
E ......................................as in egg
I .......................................a... in ee
O.......................................... in dog
U.......................................... in oo

I believe you may have received some special treatment because you were in fact not speaking the local language of catalan in barcelona, common event. Many catalan nationalists will not help you if try to speak to them in Spanish/Castellano.
