Well it depends on what you are interested in. There are many fascinating cities, I will try to detail a few of them.
Madrid, the capital of Spain, has many great museums (The Prado and the Reina Sofia) The Plaza Mayor is a must see, El Palacio Real (the Royal Palace) is awesome, and there is a lot of great shopping. Plus the city is centrally located providing easy access to other great cities such as Toledo and Segovia.
Toledo is a very typical example of a Muslim city. It is incredibly easy and fun to get lost walking around the winding, some times dead end streets. Toledo is known for sword making and jewelry. El Greco's most famous painting is there as well 'The Burial of Count Orgaz'. The catedral is suppossed to spectacular as well, though it was closed when I was there.
Segovia is also only about 30 minutes away from Madrid. It is home to the best preserved aquaducts in Spain. They are very impressive!! -search images for a photo!! Also the Alcazar is gorgeous. It looks like a castle right out of a disney movie. You can see everything in Segovia from the top of it!
Sevilla is located in the south in Andulucia. The Catedral (and its bell tower The Girlada) are amazing, it houses the remains of Christopher Columbus. other must sees are the Plaza de espana, Toro de Oro, the Alcazar, Plaza de toros among others.
Near Sevilla is Cordobab, another more Muslim city. The Mosque there is incredible and a must see!
Granada is located in the mountains and home to the Alhambra. This was a moorish castle that was taken over by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabell in 1492. It is gorgeous, there is running water through the entire thing. the gardens in the generallife are also amazing. Other things in Granada are the Alcaiceria, a gypsy market, though be careful with your money and possesions especially around the catedral.
The Costa Del Sol has many nice beach towns including Torremolinos (definitely more of a tourist town and less of an authentic cultural experience) Nerja, nicknamed El Balcon de Europa or The balcony of Europe. It is absolutely gorgeous!!
I have heard that other beach cities such as Valancia are pretty amazing as well though Ive never been.
I spent four months in Caceres and absolutely loved it. It definitely is off the beaten tourist track and I hardly ran into other Americans beyond university studetns while I was there. The Ciudad Antigua is incredibly unique. It contains architecture from many different periods in Spain. From Caceres, an easy trip is to Merida which was a capital of the Roman empire. The Museo Romano and the Roman theater and other ruins are gorgeous.
Barcelona, located in Catalunya, is another amazing city. Unlike Madrid, it is located on the coast and is very unique among other large cities. The architecture of Gaudi is unlike anything I have ever seen. La Sagrada Familia, Parque de Gaull and many other buildings are just incredible to look at. Search images of these sites and see what I mean. Las Ramblas is always exciting with the street actors and many places to shop!
Salamanca is another great stop! It it is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe and many students still study in the city. It is also home to the tormes river made famous by the book Lazarillo del Tormes. Salamanca is charming!
There are many other great cities but I hope I helped you out some.
If you are looking for great nightlife Barcelona, Madrid and Sevilla are your best bets. Though you can find something to do at night anywhere you go! |

Ok, I'll make it short:
-Barcelona (shopping, museums, clubs, beach.,sightseeing..beautiful and modern)
-Madrid (shopping, museums, clubs, sightseeing...very Spanish and classic)
-San Sebastián (sightseeing, lovely beach to walk by...small and unique)
-Sevilla (sighseeing, museum, flamenco, bull fighting...very Spanish, romantic, hot)
-Granada (sightseeing, Alhambra, Moorish culture...mystique)
-Toledo (Moorish arquitecture, sightseeing, lovely to walk around)
-Santiago de Compostela (One of the centers of Catholicism, after Rome that is. Lot's of University life going around, sightseeings, celtic culture, backpipes...nice to see, as it's totally different from the South)
And if you have time, don't miss Ibiza or Mallorca (or even better, Menorca, although a bit more expensive). Great beaches and lot's of fun |

My favorite city in Spain was Toledo. Living my whole life in the midwestern U.S.A., I was in awe of the narrow streets still made with stone.
I took a 2 week bus trip all through the country and loved every minute. We flew into Madrid then traveled south to the "Rock" and then back north, up the coast to Barcelona.
The people were friendly and even though I spoke only high school level Spanish, I was able to get around. |
