What are some Historic tourist attractions in Spain?

Show all answers

SOC JO! A capite ad calcem
God,Spain has got A LOT of attractions.I just will tell you a few here...then you can check on the web

In the north of Spain you find the Spanish Basque Country, the Capital of the Basque Country, attracts tourists for being a beautiful town and for the modern Spanish museum Guggenheim which is most famous for its extraordinary architecture.

In Spain some of the best tourist attractions can be found in Barcelona, the Capital of Catalonia (Northeast) and second largest city, has been home of many of the most famous artist of Spain. In the city you find splendid architecture by Gaudi, and painters such as Dali and Picasso who spend long periods in Catalonia.

A castell is a human tower traditionally built during festivals in many places in Catalonia, At these festivals, several teams meet and try to build the most impressive towers they can and is only one of the Spanish tourist attractions at festivals.

In the center of Spain lies Madrid As the capital since 1576, Madrid City hosts many historical Spanish monuments. The Royal castle and Spanish museums like el Prado and Reina Sofia (with paintings of Velasquez, Goya, Miro and Picasso) are only a few of the many great Spanish tourist attractions the city can present.

Valencia lies along the Spanish Mediterranean coast (south of Catalonia) and attracts a lot of tourism for its beaches and the climate and a number of tourist attractions

In the rest of central Spain tourist attractions are mainly historic Spanish cities (many of which are officially designated World Heritage cities like Salamanca), Salamanca can be considered one of the most beautiful Spanish cities.

Absolutely one of my favorite countries!!

The Moors (Arabian/Berbers from Northern Africa) conquered Spain in 711. The Europeans started to take it back in the north, and worked their way south, but it took 750 years. Therefore, there are TWO Spains, one that has been part of Europe longer and is more European (the north) and one that is more Moorish (Arabian/Berber) in the south.

The Alhambra is an over-the-top beautiful and exotic sultan's palace in the town of Granada in southern Spain, and was the final stand of the Moors against the Catholic Kings (King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella) in the 1400's. I have been to Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, India etc. but the Alhambra to me is absolutely the most beautiful Arabic building, even more than the Taj Mahal. Also, don't miss viewing the museum in the main cathedral in town which has the actual jewelry box from whence Queen Isabella gave the jewels to Christopher Columbus to fund his quest. Don't miss stopping in Cordoba near Granada to see the Great Mosque (Mezquita), absolutely stunning.

The Jewish Quarters of Seville is where we get our idea of "spanish architecture" which includes the white-washed homes with red tile roofs, spanish courtyards and wrought iron. The main Seville cathedral is stunning, integrated into the original Moorish tower, the 12th c. Giralda which is amazingly high and has withstood many major earthquakes without damage. It is the symbol of Seville. The cathedral itself is the largest in the world after St. Peter's in the Vatican. The Alcazar of Seville is a Moorish-style palace built immediately after the conquer of the catholic kings, much smaller than the Alhambra, but is important because the inside wall designs are almost completely intact.

The town of Toledo (a day trip from Madrid) is a completely intact baroque town, with the famous art and home of "El Greco".

While we are talking about Madrid, of course the Royal Palace is decadent opulence. The museum in Madrid, the Prado, ranks as one of the great museums of the world. Don't miss the famous paintings by Velasquez and Goya.

The town of Salamanca on the Portugese border of Spain is a VERY old university town founded in the days of Rome, considered an intact Renaissance city where you will truly feel like you are in "old" Spain. An amazing plaza mayor (major town square) and ancient churches and streets. Nearby is a completely intact medieval walled city of Avila.

One of the most photographed castles in the world is the Alcazar near Segovia (northern Spain). It has the tall towers and turrents you think of with a "fairy tale" castle, and was used to inspire Walt Disney to create "Cinderella's Castle".

For more recent history, the famous artist Gaudi designed one of the most bizarre churches in the world, located in Barcelona.

You can actually reserve to stay in authentic castles, many which have been renovated and converted to small inns.

Have a GREAT time if you go!

pretty
I currently live in a small town in southern Spain called Utrera. There is so much culture and history in this part of Spain its hard to pick out just a few things, but if are interested look into the following:

The cathedral in Sevilla is beautiful and contains the tomb of Christopher Columbus or in Spain Cristóbal Colón.

Alcazaba in Malaga

Mezquita in Cordoba

Cathedral Nueva in Cadiz, one of the oldest cities
