There are a bunch of options.... You can do all of these in a day, though it's nice to stay overnight if you can to get a real feel for the place - plus, if you can have dinner in these smaller towns, you might just possibly have the best meal of your life

Cadaques in Costa Brava, north of Barcelona, is my favorite. it's a seaside town - the views are just spectacular. rent a moto a drive along the coast. The Dali house is another must. (btw - the rest of the costa brava is lovely too, though watch out for the overly touristy spots)

Girona - a really lovely town to walk around - very typically Catalan

Besalu - it's a medieval town that is quite enchanting

Sitges - beach hangout, south of Barcelona

Those are some main ones.... However, there are a number of other villages that are quite something to see, especially if you want to just soak up the culture, including Peratalladas, Rupit and Vic.

Have fun!

There are several .. My favorites are The City of Vic,Gerona, Tarragona,& Lloret de Mar ... Vic is the best for me i think. its a medievil City filled with a lot of history and loads of things to see.. and every Sat they have the typical markets. They are great.....Gerona is a city of its own, very colorful and full of small streets and cute stores..
If you want Beach then go to Lloret de mar, and Tarragona has alot of Roman ruins and things of this nature and near the beach also..

Whatever you pick the longest you would have to travel by train would be about 1 hour and a half .. So its not all that bad....

Have fun whereever you decide to go!

Girona, Montserrat, Sitges, Tarragona (Roman Ruins)

Lost. at. Sea.
Take a day excursion to Andorra is a beautiful small country in the Pirineos. The shopping is famous and the city, Andorra la Vieja, is nice. The other answers give you good options, my favorite Tarragona.

Buen Viaje.

You can take a ferry from Barcelona to Morocco, its very nice there i went for a day trip once. The trip is about 45 minutes.
