What are some good sightseeing spots in Madrid?

Show all answers

San
You have to see:
The Plaza Mayor
The Retiro (park)
El Prado (with it's new extension)
The Palacio Real
Plaza de Colón
Teatro Real
Cibeles (fountain) and the Santiago Bernabeu, if you're in to football
Puerta del Sol
Towns surrounding Madrid, such as Segovia, Toledo or Pedraza
The Rastro, a huge fee market on Sundays where you'll find everything and anything.

There are tons of other museums if you like the arts, like the Thyssen, Reina Sofía, etc.

I'd get on one of those tour buses, they'll show you around the key spots in Madrid. And if you're feeling adventurous, take a drive out to El Escorial and see El Valle de los Caídos, there's a huge basilica and a big cross. It's construction was ordered by Franco, which is why many Spaniards don't like to visit this monument. It's where Franco and Primo de Rivera are buried. It's size is amazing and, as a whole, it's very impacting.

I could go on forever, but I think those are the most important.

And to Tom: you must have been terribly unlucky, because Madrid is a great city with a lot to offer, great history, fantastic nightlife and EXCELLENT FOOD.

For a city of its size, Madrid boasts an exceptional number of world - class museums and galleries. Heading the list is the Prado, with the worlds largest collection of Spanish art.

I went to Madrid last Christmas! I have never had so much fun in my life! Here are a few suggestions from my trip.

1) Your first place to visit should be the Puerta del Sol. That's where everything is and comes out of--if Madrid is the center of Spain, than del Sol is the center of Madrid. It's bustling, it's beautiful, architectually and culturally. You could go shopping there, eat there, find a hotel, history, everything!!!

2) Next, you should visit another great square: the Plaza Mayor. It's situated near one of the streets branching out of the Puerta del Sol, and it's a beautiful place with aged facades and romantic alleyways. It was the center of all of Madrid's daily happenings in olden times.

3) Then, there' s Palacio Real-the Royal palace-a grand castle filled with jewelery and imposing furniture, striking architecture also. Simply amazing, and when we were there there was a Spanish music festival.

4) We went to two art museums-El Prado is the most famous one, and it is beautiful and huge, but I became very sleepy in the middle. There are numerous well-known pictures from Goya, etc. La Reina Sofia is the other museum, also BEAUTIFUL, more modern, more intriguing and bizarre. It houses other celebrated pictures too.

5) La Corral de la Moreria is the best restaurant to view flamenco dancing in its original form. It's fascinating and moving, but you have to check their schedule. It's at night, and I am not sure if it costs a lot of money.

6) What I enjoyed the most is the Parque del Retiro. It is in the same area as the Prado. Madrid is one of the greenest cities in the World, and the park was amazing and green and vivacious, with people relaxing, children holding hands, just the place to have an afternoon siesta... You must go there!

7) A fascinating day trip to Toledo is one of the funnest adventures ever. It's the most romantic place I've ever been to. The cathedral is superbly historic, and the tiny alleyways are just quixotic. And if you're Jewish, there is a lot of Jewish history there. MUST-SEE!

Have fun!

None. And I mean NONE. Went there this Easter and had a terrible time. Got off an overnight train from Barcelona and left that evening on an overnight train to Lisbon. That's a good 14 hours so don't think I missed bits out. It is a seriously overated city. The Prado Museum is the saving grace of the city, but by no means is an art gallery ever worthy to make a whole holiday out of. By all means go for a day, but you have been warned! Definitely don't go for longer! You cannot even hide in a restaurant all day as they are quite quite terrible. I am not one to complain at most things let alone food (shy Brit that I am) but even I had to complain about my cold lasagne.

And it rained.

They say Beckham will find it difficult going from such a lovely city to the hard US, but nothing can be as bad as this.

Our Man In Bananas
As well as the fantastic attractions of Madrid, such as the Reina Sofia, the Royal Palaces and the Prado ...

Make sure you take day trips to the classical cities of Salamanca (which has the most impressive and beautiful Plaza Mayor in Spain, if not all of Europe!) and Toledo ...
