Nobody knows for sure where Columbus was born, but he IS a hero of Spain, as he was working for Spain when he found the New World, and claimed it for Spain. They look upon him as a great hero. Most people think he was born in Genoa, which was its own kingdom at the time, but is in Italy, however, there are some who think he was born in Galicia, in a town with a name that is similar.

As for the two answers above me, they both mention Christopher Columbus (Cristóbal Colón) . He is thought to be Italian by birth.

Many Spaniards today may say Fernando Torres. He plays football for Liverpool in England but he is a hero to many Spanish football fans, me included and I'm originally from Scotland.
