I've been living in Madrid for eight months, I've explored the region a bit...

Within an hour's drive the musts are Toledo and Segovia. Salamanca is a great place too, two hours away. If you're willing to drive three hours, make it to Cordoba southwards and San Sebastian northwards.

Don't forget to visit Madrid. Especially the nightlife, it's really something else...

Madrid is the capital of Spain. The Real Palace of Madrid is the official residence of His Majesty the King of Spain see http://www.spain4uk.co.uk/places/madrid.htm

Spain is many countries all rolled into one therefore the culture in Spain is very varied and interesting. see http://www.spain4uk.co.uk/Spain_culture.htm

Some of it depends on when you plan on visiting Spain. We just got back from 11 months in Madrid, so these are my suggestions:

1. Best time of year to visit is between the end of April and the end of June. The weather is great and it's bullfighting season. I thought I'd hate it, and I loved it. To understand their culture, you must realize they've been fighting bulls since caveman days. Go more than once, it's easy to get to Ventas, the bullfighting ring, on the metro. Buy your metro tickets ten at a time!!

2. July and August are really hot in Madrid, and during these months everyone who can goes to visit the seashore. We saw Fuengirola, Barcelona, and Galicia. If you're a young party animal, go to Barcelona, you'll love it.

3. September and October are generally nice fall days. This would be a good time to visit Toledo, which is a walled city from the middle ages and Spain's former capitol. Also beautiful are Aranjuez and Manzanares El Real, both of which are outside Madrid and accessible by public transport.

4. From November until April it's generally cold and rainy, with periods of sunshine, but cool temps. Rain gear for this time of year, and perhaps more time indoors.. Madrid has lots of museums, the Prado for classical art, the Reina Sofia for modern art. There are lots more treasures around town, buy the book Top 10 Madrid. It has maps of the city and metro and will save you time and headache.

If you have any more specific questions, I'd be glad to help, just email..

The World
Hello, I am Spanish (from Cantabria)

If you are in Spain and want to see interresting things around, don't miss Toledo! It is very near from Madrid, maybe one hour by car, and, if you are like El Greco, a famous Spanish-Greek painter, you will fall in love with it. It is turtuous and monumental. It deserves one or two days.

Take a look in:
http://www.spain.info/TourSpain/Destinos/TipoII/Datos+Generales/G/TP/0/Toledo?language=en

If you are in Madrid, don't miss the Royal Palace, give a stroll in the Parque del Retiro, visit the Museo del Prado, the zoo (if you have time) etc.

Also, very near you have Segovia, where you can see how a harsh Castilian town is, taste a suculent roasted pork ( if you are not a vegetarian) and see the Roman "Acueducto".

If you dare to go a little bit further, in Salamanca you will find a charming student city, where the first Spanish University was established in the 13th century. Every highschool in the country organises at any time in its lifetime a typical trip to Salmanca. once ther, you see historical buildings, eat delicious "chorizo" and "embutidos" and enjoy its lively squares (plazas), cafes and streets.

Enjoy your journey!

If you're in Santiago De Compstella, you MUST go visit the
Cathederal. Trust me you won't regret it.

Go see the rock of Gibraltar. I was there in 1973/1974 and took a tour of "the rock". Also check out the Bull Fights. Good Luck and Have fun!

Have a great day!
