Patatas bravas= fried potatoes with a spicy sauce that resembles mayonese

Fideuà= a bit like paella but with noodles

Crema catalana= it's like custard with a caramel top

Panellets= special dessert made with pine nuts and eaten in Halloween for "la castañada"

Coca= it's a sort of thick toast and you put food on top, from omlett to ham.

Escalivada= made of aubergine, pepper, onion, tomato, garlic and olive oil

Pa amb tomaquet= basially it's pieces of bread with squashed tomato on the top. You pour olive oil (with pieces of garlic inside) and salt on top. These bread usually comes with every dish.

Cargols= snails are v. typical

And that's what comes to my mind right now

Here are a dozen for you...

Pantomacca... Baguette bread cut in half, you take a ripe tomato and rub (squish) it over the bread until all the juice has impregnated the bread, then add a few grains of salt and a drizzle of virgin olive oil...Typical breakfast food. You can add a thin slice of Serrano ham or some tuna if you like. (This is one of the basics!)

Zarzuela de Marisco... Excellent fish stew

Escudella I Carn d'Olla... A stew made with several types of meat, chickpeas and cabbage.

Patacó... fresh tuna, courgettes, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, all stewed together and covered with a sauce made of garlic, parsley, saffron and almonds.

Escalibada... A vegetable dish made with eggplant (aubergines), red peppers (pimento type), onions and potatoes.

Butifarra...typical cooking sausage, used in stews or grilled on its own.

Panadons... pasties (turnovers) filled with spinach and pine nuts.

Purrusalda... a thick soup made with salt cod, leeks, potatoes, paprika, garlic and white pepper.

Salsa Romescu... A spicy sauce made with different peppers, tomatoes, garlic, parsley, crushed almonds and hazelnuts, olive oil and vinegar. Excellent with fish or meat.

Bunyols...Puff pastry filled either with chantilly, vanilla cream, chocolate mousse, or pumpkin purée

Crema Catalana ...a dessert made of a soft custard then covered with a sprinkling of sugar that is caramelised in the oven... Delicious! (Similar to the french "crème brulée".)

Panellets, a small pastry made with potato flour and sugar covered in pine nuts. There are other varieties, but this is the best one, This is a sweet, mostly sold in november around All Saints Day.

There are dozens of different dishes, the catalonian cuisine is quite rich and varied.
Then you also have all the typical spanish dishes, tortilla de patata, paellas (the catalonians add sausage to theirs), etc.
And Tapas of all sorts...
I enjoy going out to eat in Barcelona, it is always delightful to find something new!

Paella(rice and different seafood),Tapas(sml snacks, differents dishes, garlic prawns, meaballs, tuna pasta etc),entrepans(rolls),fish,poultry,chees... much the same as anywhere else, but the added the dressings and the amount of garlic used is different to us.

You'll also find you can get a good steak and chips and food from other nations including McDonalds, lol.

Basically Spanish cuisine, same as everywhere, but in Catalunya (as they spell it there), they also have something called catalan butter, which they put on the toast, and on sandwiches (bocadillos) which are pretty simple by American standards. Catalan butter is olive oil, garlic, a little onion and some tomato, cooked until it's pretty close to creamy, then spread on the bread.

also: Crema Catalana, a dessert, similar to flan or crème brulée, but a little smoother, caramelized sugar on top.

and grilled seafood is really popular, as they are on the sea. Seafood is very fresh there, and often cooked very simply: just tossed on a grill or a griddle and "toasted".

The best chocolates in Spain are made in Barcelona, and there are some of the best ice cream shops I have ever been in, all up and down the Ramblas. Almost all handmade ice creams right there in the shop. Really fresh, really yummy! (I think I put on 10 lbs in a week there, even with all the running around we did, just on the ice cream alone.)

Lots of sea foods, but just the usual Spanish cuisine, too.
