What are some strange foods that I can find in Spain? |
I'm going there in the spring, and I really would like to try different foods, but especially ones different from the norm.
Do you know of any I can find & their name/what they are?
If it helps, I'm going all over Spain. |

If you want strange... get Paella with Rabbit =) I like it... but I'd never be able to eat a rabbit alone !! it taste's more like chicken than chicken...
You can buy horse steak in certian reatraunts also... i've never eaten it... because horses are to race not to eat I believe...
You can also eat a varity of sea food. some places like in the south you can buy some crazy things !! o_O |

You MUST (and your guides, if you are on a tour, will make sure that you) try: Paella and the hams...they have the most incredible array of cured hams!
You should try Pulpo a la gallega, trufas heladas, and the coffee!!!!! AVOID ALL STARBUCKS!!! Drink the real local stuff. WAAAAAY better! It is what Starbucks only dreams of being!
If you are going all over, at the coasts, be SURE to eat seafood!!!! it is SOOOO fresh and yummy! But seafood is available, and quite fresh everywhere.
They eat organ meats more than we do, so if you aren´t squeamish about it, riñones and hĂgado are great! If you are old enough, drink the sherry. It´s an acquired taste, so just try it once, and if you don´t like it, try it again in about ten years. Order FINO, and if they try to give you vino, say No, TĂo Pepe. And you´ll get the best there is.
tortillas. Unlike what they call a tortilla in the US and Mexico, this is a fat omelette. Most typically, with onions and potatoes, it comes in many varieties, and many places will let you order special. If you like spinach, the tortilla de espinacas is incredible! (almost everywhere...I've never been disappointed). And they have tapas that are just spinach with a little bacon and garbanzos, that are really nice, too.
I also recommend that you buy a cookbook. Not the kind they make up for tourists, like the tapas ones I saw all over last trip, but go into a book store and ask for a cookbook for someone there. You will have to make some conversions, and get a scale to make them work, but it's a great souvenir for the foodie! (I have cookbooks from many places where I've traveled, starting with the one I bought in Spain...if it's still available, it's called Cocinar es Facil, and they really go that route! There's a recipe for how to make a ham sandwich! I love it!)
¡Buen provecho! |

If you're in Barcelona, there are some great things to try - not necessarily strange, but things you shouldn't miss - I've included a link below.
As far as strange things go - the spanish eat absolutely every single part of the pig - even the hair (left on "morro" like pork scratchings). So you could ask for "Galtas" which are actually really nice (pigs cheeks) or pigs trotters (nice if done well, but loads of gelatine) which you'll find on most menus.
Also, if you're in Barcelona, be sure to visit La Boqueria market about a third of the way down on your right (you can't miss it, also called Merct Sant Josep) which is a food market selling absolutely everything edible. Like everything. Fruits you have never even seen before, offal and animal parts that everyone else throws away, and even bugs!! Try it out, it's very cool. |

Go to a proper Spanish tapas bar, full of locals and check the menu, or just point. It will be great. Enjoy several little dishes with a good Spanish wine.
They do eat snails which in some areas can be put into paellas. Paella inland is meaty with rabbit or chicken, by the coast it can be with whole shell fish you need to get out of the shells (can be messy).
Tripe is another popular dish.
The Cerano ham is the Spanish version of Parma ham and I think better.
Squid and octopus are popular.
Very green virgin olive oil poured on Spanish bread with salt and black pepper added is a delicious alternative to bread and butter.
Sardines, salamis and the Spanish cheeses are worth trying too with olives of course.
The tortilla a potato omelet is found every where but it is a bit dull. It is what it is.
Rabbit and Goat are on the menu in some areas.
You need to find little restaurants in the back streets where the locals go,
Try chorros and chocolate for breakfast. Little fingers a cross between a cake and donut, sprinkled with sugar and dipped into rich hot chocolate.
I do not find the Spanish food is usually spicy, so do not worry about that. Chorito sausages can be spicier, they are red and need cooking. Black ones are a blood sausage so if you are squeamish you have been warned.
It will be easier to take a small dictionary with you to check the name of the food on the menu rather than suggest dishes which may well be local to the area you are. Or simply ask, they wont mind. |
