well if you can go to bcn, you don't need any sights because simply being in the city is great! i would advice you to take walks through la ciutat vella, the Old Town of bcn, because it's so beautiful. (don't only stay on the large streets.) that would be raval as well as barri gòtic and born, the districts right and left of la rambla. if you are in el raval, go to the place in front of macba, the museum of contemporary art of the city, it's really nice there. but raval is also where most cannons are, so take care at night.

you might also want to go to el parque güell, a park created by antonio gaudì, it's really nice there. go to the viewpoint, the view over the city is great.

for a rest i recommand chocolate cake at von till, c/balmes, 15 :-)

if you want to go shopping or to a restaurant or club: look out for the miniguide, it's a english-language city magazine with loads of tips to go out. you can find it in smaller, independent shops and restaurants in the city center. or check www.bcn-inside.com, where they have started to put the mag online as .pdf.

i don't think you need to stay outside bcn, but take a hostel, not a hotel. for hostels you can check

Yeah, Parc Güell is cool -- but you *have* to go to Gaudí's Temple de la Sagrada Familia, which is totally, totally amazing. And climb the stairs: it's very worth it.
There are some good museums (Miró and Picasso, for instance), and the old Jewish ghetto (Montjuïc) could be neat too. Plus I found the city just a really nice place to walk around in, not even being particularly touristy. But la Sagrada Familia was fantastic; if you can only see one thing, I'd definitely make it that.

Incidentally, if you need to change traveller's cheques or currency, go to one of the Caixa banks; I remember their rate being good, and I think there was no commission on cash exchange and little (way less than in most places) on traveller's cheques. Very good deal.

I recently had a trip to Barcelona and found the city rather expensive. I would advise you to stay out side the city along the coast, somewhere like Tarragona and get the train into Barcelona to see sights. Sights are expensive to get in and view. If you go on a tour bus you will be given a voucher for most of the sights offering you 1.00 off your visits.
The best advice is to watch your purse, there are a lot of professional pick-pocktes

2 days is short time to know a big city, anyway, the touristic and obvious placer are already mentioned...
is any tourist place safe of pickpocketers?
is any touristic area bars non expensive?

special places to feel the pulse of the city:
el Born: trendy but friendly
el Raval: multicultural ,middle eastern flavor
gracia: with plazas and bars

food: try fideua, esqueixada,

art: Macba area, and concell de cent street. don´t miss Caixaforum
get the multitravel card, for metro and bus
check www.tmb.com
and www.bcn.es
gaudi´s ticket are very expensive, but guel park is free
( get there by bus 24)
and PLEASEEEEEE don't buy a mexican hat.... why the guiris do that?????
guiris= tourist from anglosaxon or nordics roots
feel Free to contac
enjoy the city
