Food can be pricey, but there are some great values, like Quinze Nits and Origen 99.9 (see below). A couple places like that will give you a real flavor of Catalan cuisine. Make a couple meals by shopping at the always fun Boqueria market, too, to save some cash. You can get lunch at some of the local Middle Eastern places for 4 euros or so, too.

The what to do question gets asked a lot, so you can check the archives for answers (e.g. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aij72magKn7nZasHKRFAgtTsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090413164443AAfaUUq&show=7#profile-info-AlMlV0Acaa). Here are some of my favorites:

Great city. This question gets asked a lot. Check the archives for more thoughts (e.g.http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;... )

My standard thoughts:

Museums: Museu Picasso, Fundacio Miro, Museu de la Ciutat (City Museum). The 2nd is a little out of the in the Parc Montjuic, but is the best collection of Miro's work anywhere.

Architecture: Sagrada Familia, Parc Guell, Casa Mila (aka La Pedrera), Casa Batllo, in that order. All these are Gaudi buildings, the first two are must-see, and the 3rd almost is. You can walk down the street Passeig de Gracia from Casa Mila to at least see the outside of Casa Batllo as well as other Art Noveau Buildings. A short hike up to the Tres Creus in Parc Guell gives you nice views of the city and helps orient you.

Music: Palau de Musica. Another Art Noveau gem. Try to catch a concert there (make sure its in the main hall) over the tour. It's gorgeous and the music is great. Buy tickets online.

restaurants: Les Quinze Nits (15 Nights) in Placa Real - get there about 20-30 minutes before opening as they don't take reservations. If you can't get in there, try La Fonda (I hear it's owned by the same people). Both excellent Catalan food at very reasonable prices.

Also try Origen 99.9, a local chain, but good authentic Catalan food. Get there a little before opening because they don't take reservations and often only do one sitting. http://www.origen99.com/web/

Tapas Gaudi of La Rambla de Gaudi (not Las Ramblas, but near Sagrada Familia) is a good tapas place.

nightlife: Clubs everywhere, for a slightly more relaxed and less touristy experience try Placa del Sol or La Cervesera Artesana (http://www.lacervesera.net/eng/indexeng.... best beer in Barcelona, not that that says a lot. Drink wine everywhere else - reds from La Rioja, whites and Cavas from Penedes).

Other: La Boqueria market, Las Ramblas, Barri Gotic, including Cathedral and Santa Maria del Mar. Just wander that area. Sitges for nearby beaches, though the ones in the city are decent if you don't have the time to get down there.

Day trips: Montserrat for the mountain monastery and hiking (and the caves that inspired the Sagrada Familia if you're lucky), Sitges for beaches (Cadaques is better but farther), Tarragona for Roman ruins (and more beaches). Figueras for the Dali museum.

Have fun!

It is generaly an expensive city, (especially with the strong euro) but the further away you get from the centre of barcelona, basicly just don't eat or shop near the ramblas, its incredibly over priced and touristy.
I recommend buying food in on of the many markets in the city, and eating it in a park or beach or something...
Theres TONs to do there, shop, swim in the sea, look at the architecture, museums, etc. a guide book such as time out, would help you more than me...

There's a free walking tour there that shows you EVERYTHING! It's called New Europe Tours or something like that. I went to those in every city in europe and it was amazing, I learned so much and saw soo much. I also took this "cooking class" for around 16 euros and we made sangria and tapas and paella. It was so much fun!

It depends where you come from. You may find food cheap or expensive.

Generally, Barcelona is expensive but if you go a little off the main tourist routes you can live on the 'menu del día', This is a 3 course lunch with water or wine for less than €10. A great bargain.

In my opinion, the best guide book is 'Time Out - Barcelona'

It can be pricey in the centre but the back streets usually have some good local restaurants and bars which are fairly well priced.

Simply loads to do there. The ramblas, (outdoor market) see the cathedral and la familia, just walk around the place. It is full of history. Open top bus or take the metro to the football stadium, go on the cable car. Nice beach too.

Food can vary quite a bit and I'd definitely avoid eating at any restaurant in the Ramblas or surrounding area as it'll be more expensive and not as good - with the exception of some of the bars in la boqueria market.

You'll find that most restaurants have a menu del dia which often offers 2 or 3 courses including drinks for 8-10 euros from a limited selection, although I've seen them as low as 5 euros.

Otherwise you can ask them to make you a sandwich in any bar, which is always good value.

As for what to see, there is so much that it depends on how long you are there for and what you like. Definitely walk down the Ramblas, although it's a bit touristy these days, but be careful of your valuables.

One of the best options is to take the hop on hop off tourist bus, which is arounf 15-20 euros and takes you on a good tour of the city, but allows you to get off to see all the sights you really want to spend some time on.

Apart from the Gaudi architecture which you must see, check out the Picasso museum and if you like modern art, Barcelona's museum of mern art (MACBA). You might also want to check out the Museum of Catalan art at Montjuic and if you time it right will see the magic fountain in the evening.

Food doesn't have to be expensive. you can go to the market and buy some things...if you are staying in a place that has a fridge, then you can get things that need to stay cold...hams and such are great, or you just go in the morning, pick up some bread, cheese, olives, a little fruit and some meat, and eat a picnic for lunch...much cheaper than a restaurant.

Cold water is the one thing you need to worry about. You want to get that at grocery stores, much cheaper than stopping at a café to rehydrate, and it will surely be hot!

Must sees are easy to find online.
