By the way, they are not two people, but only one: Robert Cavelier麓s title was "Sieur de la Salle" and he died in 1687, so he couldn麓t be alive in 1885 as someone says in the answer above. In this site, they say that Cavelier claimed for France all the territories drained by the Mississipi river in 1682; check it:
