What are the differences between Catalan & Castallian? |
I hope I don't cause any offence my asking that, and if I do then I'm sorry in advance.
Its just, I've been learning Spanish at school, I think its called Castillian. I'm going on a school trip to Barcelona next Febuary and I've heard that there, the locals speak another language called Catalan?
What are the difference between the two languages?
I hope I've put this in the right category.
Is it like in England, how people have different accents, depending on where they're from?
Please help! :) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx |

Castellano is a language, Spanish, the language spoken in latin America and here in Spain.
Apart from that, we have another 3 completely different languages, Galician, which is spoken only by the people from Galicia ( a region in the NW of Spain ), Basque, a rare language spoken in the Basque Country (N of Spain), and Catalan, which is spoken by the people from Catalonia (Barcelona's region, in the NE of Spain ).
It is a completely different language, with some similitudes to Spainsh ( not a mixture with French ).
But don't worry, because the people who speaks one of these three languages, all of them, are bilingual, and speak both, that and Spanish.
They speak Catalan with their relatives and at school, but they will always talk to you in a perfect SPANISH (Castellano).
Apart from that, nothing to do with the theme of Catalan, when we speak Spanish, people have a different accent in every region, but that is, as you said, like in Britain, the same language with a different entonation or pronuntation of the letter s f.e.
( the user who answered under this response don't seem to have any idea about our languages ) |

I went to barcelona nd i spoke in spanish = castillian. They've got a co-oficial language: spanish nd catalan... catalan is a mixture of french and spanish. They speak it at schools but they speak spanish too... no mean where u go in spain. they all wil understand u. Catalan isnt an accent.. is another language which is spoken only in catalonia... andalucian, aragonian or canarian ppl hav got differents accents but its the same language. they'll understand u if u speak in spanish |

Hi!! In Spain, apart from Spanish, there are other languages. For example, in "El paĂs Vasco" they speak Spanish (Castillian) AND Vasco. In Galicia they speak Spanish AND Gallego. Some of the communities in Spain speak another language apart from Spanish. But they all speak Spanish, of course. Barcelona is in a Comunnitie called Cataluña. In Cataluña they speak Catalán and Spanish (Castillian).
Hope I helped you!!!

Here in Spain we have very different accents depending on where we live. You should hear a person from Andalucia speaking. It's totally different. But we also have 3 more languages than castillian, Gallego (not sure how you call it in english) which is spoken in Galicia and is kind of a mixture between spanish and Portuguese, Euskera, also called Basc, which is the ancient spoken language in Europe, it already existed when romans came and it's spoken in Navarra and Basc Country and some territories in France that are next to the frontier, and Catalán which is kind of a mixture between french and castillian and it is spoken in Cataluña. But you should know that in all this areas castillian is also spoken. Is obligatory for them to learn it because is the national language. So you won't have any problems if you speak in castillian. |

Catalan is a dialect of Castillian. Also of Languedoc (Southern French).
Everyone in Barcelona speaks Spanish. Most people speak Catalán amongst themselves, or if addressed in Catalán, but you won't have any trouble getting along with Spanish (which, you are correct, is also called Castellano/Castilian).
It IS pretty different. You won't be able to just jump in and start speaking it, but you will pick up on a little as you go. It is easy to figure out the written language, and fairly easy to understand, especially if you know some French, too, but you won't get into too much trouble, as they all have to speak Spanish. It's still the OFFICIAL language.
It's NOT really like English being different in different places...that's just accents. A Dialect is another language, which is UNDERSTANDABLE to a speaker of the sister language, but not produceable. A Spaniard from any other region has to study Catalán (probably not for all that long) to be able to actually speak it.
