For Nune: That ended in 1969!
Actually, the Inquisition was most powerful during the 15th and 16th centuries...waning, but still on the books at the end of the 19th or early 20th century. (I can't remember the actual date it was repealed). - of course, that's one of the classic Monty Python sketches.
Still:
So many it's hard to list them all. What are YOUR interests? History? Art? Architecture? Roman era? pre Roman? Medieval? Renaissance or Modern?
Personally, I'm less of a fan of Barcelona, but you can TOTALLY get into the Modernist architecture in Eixample, even if the rest of the city doesn't flip you.
Madrid is more Renaissance. Before the 1500s, it was just a little village. The Prado is an absolute must for everyone. Plaza Mayor, tons of monuments that you just walk by and maybe take photos of. Royal Palace, shopping, clubs, FOOD!
You sort of HAVE to do Seville. If it is at all possible. The Cathedral, and climb the Giralda, the Alcázar, and the Park. Other than that, things become less MUSTS, and more what interests YOU.
Granada - If you miss the Alhambra, you can't really say you've seen Spain. And there are a couple of quarters you want to wander through as well...the AlbaicĂn, and the Arab market. The Cathedral there is pretty spectacular!
Barcelona, you MUST go through the Eixample and check out the architecture...stop and tour Sagrada Familia, Parc Güell, La Pedrera (Casa Milá) and maybe Casa Batlló. The Barri Gotic is neat, and you have to stroll the Ramblas, checking out the stalls, they are in groups: flowers, pets, etc. You should stop and eat at one of the cafés...the food is about the same prices as anywhere, but the drinks - that's where they get you! You can't not drink, because you get so dehydrated there.
Definitely try to go through the Boqueria, one of the world's great markets.
Again, tons of other things to do, but those are the musts.
I spent a month there last year, and only got done about half of what I wanted to do!

Spain is a very large country with such diverse cultures, languages, landscapes, and history, that's it's very difficult to generalise on the main attractions. There are really too many places to list, and you'd need months to cover it all.
Suggest you get a guidebook and work out an itinerary based on what you're interested in. Spain is an easy place to get around with good rail and bus systems.
And don't forget to look at the North of Spain if you have time, the beautiful cities here are often overlooked. The Basque cities of Bilbao and San Sebastian are well-known, but try to include cities such as Santiago de Compostela, Leon, Burgos, Pamplona, or Zaragoza. |

Spain is such a huge country, there are tons of things to see. It depends on what you want to see. Are you more of a big city person or would you rather visit the smaller towns?
Madrid has a great amount of stuff for example:
Retiro Park
El Museo de Reina Sofia (houses Picasso's famous "Guernica" painting)
El Prado Museum
Palacio Real
Flamenco shows
night life
Plaza Mayor
Barcelona:
La Sagrada Familia (church designed by Gaudi)
Aquarium
Las Ramblas
Bullfighting (although I personally think that's cruel)
Salvador Dali Museum in Figueres (just outside of Barcelona)
Olympic pavilion
Joan Miro museum
nightlife/clubs
The smaller towns have a lot to offer as well like Segovia with its enormous and beautiful aqueduct, Toledo home of El Greco and my favorite cathedral in all of Spain, Granada with the gorgeous La Alhambra (last moorish stronghold), Salamanca with Spain's largest and oldest university and most beautiful Plaza Mayor and good nightlife, San Sebastian with its gorgeous beach and basque influence. Sevilla, with Spain's largest and most ornate celebration of Semana Santa.
Spain is rich with history, culture, youth and tradition. It seems to have something for everyone. I used to live there and I found I liked both big and small cities for different reasons. Assess what you'd like to do and take it from there. |

Spain is a large country depends where you are going.
Plan your city visits first then go from there.
Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, Sevilla, Cordoba, Malaga, Bilbao, Santiago de Compostella, Valencia, all places worth visiting..
As I say decide on your cities wherever you go you will enjoy. |
