What are the plastic bags hanging in the trees in menorca?
After just holidaying in Menorca I saw a lot of plastic bags hanging in trees at the side of the roads. I was wondering what they are for. Does anybody know?
There is a insect called legionaria, this insect attacks the pinetrees, with this bags, the insect gets inside the bag and dies

never been there but bags are generally put on fruit to stop the birds eating it before it's picked

as in spain, they are filled with a sweet syrup to attract the bugs, to stop them attacking the fruit, as others say, it is not to scare the birds away. i lived in spain for three years and it was common practise there.

In the case of my area where there are many olive groves, they hang bags of soil or bottles of water on branches to weigh the branch down. It's to keep the shape of the olive tree the way they want it to grow.

If they were fruit trees then they are to scare away the birds.
Edit: I lived in Spain for 5 years and filling them with syrup wasn't common practise there. I lived right next to a plantation of Nispero trees and they used them for the birds.
