I can't believe that this listing is representative of Spanish kids!
What you do depends greatly on where you live.
In winter, kids hang out in cafes, bars, McDonalds etc., or friends' houses. Bars does not mean drinking alcohol. You almost never see drunken kids, unlike in England, the cesspit of Europe. In some parts there is a problem with 'botellazos' (sp?), where enormous numbers of kids meet in town and drink booze purchased from shops.
Skiing is popular when the is enough cash and you live near the slopes. Computers are in most homes (need I explain further!).
From springtime onwards the cafes put their tables out on the street. This is popular for all.
Summer. THE BEACHES! if not, the pool. Lot of people have access to private pools, if not the municipal pools can be great.
Barbaques.
Sport, generally is popular, both taking part or watching (football / soccer). The weather is so good!
On Sundays, Spanish families often lunch together. Going out to lunch is very popular with the entire clan going to out of town restaurants to eat paella, roast lamb, etc.
Eating out is an important part of Spanish life although it is becoming more expensive each year.
Spanish kids go out more with the family than in England. It is not felt to be uncool, especially if they go somewhere interesting.
The whole 'ambiente' is quite old fashioned.
In the south, there are the various holidays and fiestas to live for. Reyes, carnival, semana santa, the ferias, the summer holidays, and so on. There are many local fiestas.
In fact the city council of Lerida, up north-east, has invented some fiestas to encourage older kids to stay in town and not seek work in the big city. The biggest and best is the 'Aplec del Cargol' (look it up) where everyone goes to the fairground to eat snails and listen to pop music.
There are also some massive annual pop concerts and musical festivals, as well as small local ones.
Cinema is still popular, but is declining. |

I was brought up in spain from the age of 2 and lived there until i was 24. I loved it. Hobbies are things like going to the beach after school, playing with friends, swimming, cinema etc... i loved growing up there. You can go into all restaurants, you eat late. it's warm, very laid back. Very safe for kids. Couldn't have imagined being brought up anywhere else. kids all listen to the same stuff. There are some great spanish singers, but they listen to all the mainstream english, american music too. |
