What did you think of nerja when you were there?

I would love to hear from anyone who has visited Nerja in the southeast of Spain . If you could give me any idea what life is like there. another question would 21 days be too much time to spend there , as i like the coast and hope that the end of september will not be too quite............thanks........Ger

I live near Nerja. It is a very popular resort favoured by the British. Many come year after year. I have friends who love the place and have been coming three times a year recently.
It is one of the few unspoilt places on the Costa Del Sol. It still retains the charm of a typical Andalucian town by the sea, which also has lovely beaches.. The scenery surrounding Nerja is stunning. There are some beautiful white villages behind Nerja in the mountains to discover. Frigililana is the closest. It is thought to be the most beautiful village in Andalucia. Then there is Competa or Archez. The drive up there is awesome.
To the north of Nerja you have Granada. The drive there via Motril is absolutely stunning. At Granada there is the jewel in the crown, so to Speak. The Alhambra palace. This place is a "must see". I have been twice and will keep going because I find it fascinating. You could also take a side trip to the town of Orgiva. That is the town Chris Stewart wrote about in his book "Driving over lemons".
To the West of Nerja you have Malaga. There you can visit the Castillo Gibralfaro or the Alcarzba or the cathedral.
North of Malaga you have Antequera or the The gorge at El Chorro. Check the following link to view this area www.andalucia.com/antequera/chorro/home....
As for staying for three weeks, it really depends on what you want out of your holiday. If you just want to lie on a beach, then yes, three weeks is too long, but if you intend on getting out and seeing the real Spain then three weeks is not enough.

Edit´ I just spotted you wont be hiring a car. That will make life in Nerja very limiting. There are some lovely places to search for within Nerja, but there is so much more to Spain than the coast. I live in the mountains, believe me, it´s a wonderful place.

Nerja is a small town on the cost with a great deal of expats living and working. The September weather is normally in the mid to high 20c. 21 days seems a long time if you mean just to stay in the Town ,if you drive, hire a car to places like Granada, Malaga, Marbella and even Gibraltar as all are in a 3 hour drive or so ! What ever you do i hope you enjoy your holiday .Now i see your not driving there is a number of tourist coach trips to the above. So relax and enjoy your 21 days.

We stayed in Nerja for a long weekend - what a beautiful place. There are some good restaurants and bars and just by the Balcony of Europe there is a great atmosphere in the evening - traders, artists, mime artists, musicians, etc.
There are some lovely beaches and coves to walk to that you may find you have all to yourself. Burriana beach has a good name and some nice chiringuitos to eat in. Visit the caves - well worth it, quite spectacular and not too expensive. If I were staying 3 weeks I would use it as a base and go exploring to the villages surrounding the area.

We were in the Costa del Sol for 19 days and could not spend that much time in just Nerja. The beach and views are extraordinary and if I needed a hotel there I would stay at Paradores, but 21 days is too long in that one place. Nobody mentioned the caves yet, and it is another interesting thing to do there. However, I agree that in that much time you should see everything from Nerja to Tarifa along the coast. Each city or town is different and interesting. Also day trips to Sevilla, Granada, Ronda are easy to do, even with a bus tour. We also went to Gibralta and Africa-Tangier, Morocco for a day trip. With that much time it would be a shame to spend it all in one place. But Nerja is one of the very beautiful beach resorts and unless you get bored, it's nice. Good luck. I hope this was some help. If you want to see photos see my trip in Trip Planner and the Journal.
