I cannot believe that anyone with average intelligence could not have worked that out for themselves. even typing the question out would take more intelligence than what was required to work out the answer

domme me
they don't *mean* anything.
it is an international standard to identify airports. generally they are closely related to the name of the airport (ie, JFK) or the city (ie, LAS = Las Vegas) although the name may have some differences
(ie LAX = Los Angeles)
where two cities have similar names - or if there are 2 airports serving one city - the three letter identity will be different for both

jo jo
The abbreviated letters are exactly that... abbreviated letters of the airport. All airports have their own unique 3 letters to make for better communication for airlines etc.

benji
they are just three letters removed from the name that are unique that identify those airports

finestrat1
Just to simplify communication between airlines and airports and to avoid errors in communication.
LHR London Heathrow
LON London City
NYC New York City
JFK John F. Kennedy Intl. Airport
LGA La guardia Airport in New York
and so on

It`s actually not rocket science :- BRiStol, BarCeloNa etc

Carousel
AGP = Malaga
LGW = London Gatwick
YYZ = Toronto
GRX = Granada

That's just four, there are thousands of them

As you are so interested in the Airport & City Codes I suggest you take a look at the website www.seldec.com

They can sell you a book titled Airport & City Codes which lists every airport in the world.

Hope this helps.
