Coffee drinking in Spain is an art!
And the making and serving is also...
It goes everywhere from...
Solo corto (short black, extrapotent) (similar to the italian ristretto)
Solo (black)
Solo largo (long black, not so strong)
Cortado (black "cut" with a dash of milk) (also called manchado like the itlalian machiatto)
Café con leche (coffee with about 1/3 milk)
Mitad (half coffee - half milk)
Una nube (hot milk with about 10% coffee)
Café americano (10% coffee the rest hot water)
and the italian style Capucchino with the milk froth on top and a dash of cocoa powder).
Then there are the spiked ones:
Carajillo (black coffee with a good dash of brandy).
There are others with either a dash of rum, anisette liquor, or other liquors to taste such as Cointreau.
Then again some people just drink colacao, which is chocolate milk, others have tea...
An old fashioned typical breakfast was hot chocolate (thick enough to coat your spoon) served with "churros" (fried crullers) Delicious, but a bit heavy on the stomach! it's still popular in the winter, especially after a long night out on the town!
As to breakfast food... the most normal is just a bread roll some have it toasted with jam and butter... Others have it toasted with a drizzle of olive oil and a slice of serrano ham.
(In Catalunya they squish a tomato on the bread (just leaving the juicey part, and lightly salt it before the drizzle of oil...They call it Pantumaca) |

Small cups or glasses of strong black coffee, 'café solo' or 'cortado' with a little milk.
The truck drivers' breakfast, a 'carajillo' , black coffee with a slug of brandy, is now illegal for drivers but you will still see people starting the day with one in working mens' cafés. |

Strong coffee will do it in any language, any country.
Sangria with lunch would be nice.
