Prior to the Roman invasion, there were Phonecian settlements and Greek settlements, mostly in the same places, along the coast. Cartagena was one of the largest of those that was settled by both, Cádiz was, also. I believe Valencia and Barcelona, also, were settled first by the Phonecians, then the Greeks, then the Romans.
Rome was very strong at building roads, and built the infrastructure of roads into the middle of the country, still used today...the main superhighways. As was already mentioned, the Visigoths invaded, though they weren't exactly an empire, they were a bunch of little kingdoms (the basis for the reinos or regiones autónomas of today's Spain). They were invaded, in 711, by the Moors, who went as far as Santiago de Compostela, all the way in the Northwest part of Spain, but were quickly pushed back to a line running through Madrid from East to West...the Moors had a long history in places like Toledo, Córdoba (the seat of the largest Caliphate west of Damascus for a while), Sevilla, and Granada (just to name a few of the major cities - their influence can be seen in the architecture of most of the cities and towns along and south of that line.) From about the 11th century, the Christians pushed the Moors back, bit by bit, until only Granada and the region around the city remained under the control of the Moorish kings...and, as noted above, Fernando and Ísabel, the Catholic Monarchs, won the battle of Granada in 1492, and finally expelled the Moors once and for all. Spain has, since their reign, been close to the current borders, and under the royalty and republics of Spain, alone. No other empires. |

When the Roman Empire crumbled, Spain was controlled by the Visigoths.
In 711, the Moors invaded. They were finally forced out of Iberia in 1492.

In modern times the moors ruled a large area of Spain. They refused to be ruled by the Spanish when they were deposed.
many of the Moors Committed suicide by leaping from the mountain tops at the village of Salto del Negro, in English 'Black mans leap'. I drive through this village every day.
Since then Spain has had self rule. |

There was no "Spain" till 1492, with the Catholic King and Queen.
After that, during XIX Century, and during a short time, Spain was ruled by French (with Napoleon. Napoleon's brother was declared king of Spain).
Before that, as Iberian Peninsula, it was ruled by moors, visigoths and rome.
Only Rome, anyway, can be considered as an Empire Iberian Peninsula was under, as in all the other cases the "conquers" became "spaniards" |

Since the middle ages Spain has been the center of it's own empire. There has been no foreign rulers since Rome. |
