Madrid is a city with different neighborhoods. It is a traditional city, conservative in the way Spain and spanish people can be ( which is much less than americans can be). You can imagine living in Madrid as living in Washington DC or Boston.
Barcelona is more contemporary, modern city, the city of Gaudi, the city of arts and the industrial city and it`s by the sea. You can compare living in Barcelona like living a city which is part from New York and part from San Francisco. |

Madrid is baking hot in the summer and freezing in the winter. Barcelona doesn't have such extremes AND it is on the coast - no contest, Barcelona wins :) |

I should think it would be entirely personal...I would like them both, but I think I like Madrid better.
I'm going to throw a monkey wrench into your plans, though, and tell you that Seville is a great place, if you really like traditional, romantic Spain. |

Well I like more Madrid, but its my town. Its a capital city of Spain, there are a lot of interesting places near, Segovia, Toledo o Alcala De Henares, were Cervantes was born.
Barcelona is more European city. A lot of place of arts, you can feel de Essence of Gaudy in all the city. And There´re beaches are big with locals and many people. |

I prefer Madrid - a modern, vibrant city, which is more "old-fashioned" in many aspects (Castillian).
Barcelona is great if you want one long party, but all that Gaudi gets on your nerves, as does the Catalan language, and there is a lot more tourists and street crime. |
