It's like comparing apples and oranges...They are really very different cities in very different provinces...Catalunya and Castilla y Leon...however in my opinion, they are both worth seeing... both cities also offer hop-on, hop-off buses which are pretty reasonably priced (In Barcelona @ Plaza Catalunya and in Madrid near Plaza del Sol) and give you a good idea of what the cities have to offer. Barcelona boasts the quirky and interesting architecture of Gaudi - prime examples are the Parque Guell, La Sagrada Familia Church, and la Perdera. Also you can see, as someone mentioned, some of the works of the more avant-garde artists such as Miro and Picasso and if you take the Renfe or Cercanias (national and regional trains), in two hours you'll be in front of the great Dali museum. THe historical Cafe Quatre Gats (Four Cats - in the Barrio Gotico area of Barcelona) is where these great figures of modern art once gathered in and it's a real nice place for a meal or just to visit. Barcelona is also great for partying and just getting lost in! Madrid, is more traditional in its architecture. The Prado museum houses some of, if not the greatest collection of classical art I've seen in my travels around Europe. The Thiessen Bornemiza museum is also worth seeing. For Madrid nightlife, Plaza del Sol, is the place to be! Also its about a 30-40 min ride to El Escorial, one of the great Spanish palaces and a World Heritage site...Another 2 hours north of Madrid you will find the charming city of Salamanca, another world heritage site with its Gothic and plateresque (like intricate etching on silver but instead on rock facades - quite fascinating) architecture. . As you travel in Spain you'll see that each province, each region is really very unique...You'll never step in the same Spain twice...enjoy! |

Eh, it's kind of a tie for me personally, they both have a lot to offer.
I recommend staying in the Hotel Colon.
And visit the Picasso Museum, you can go underground there and see the actual ground level where the roman's lived when they inhabited Spain. It's probably the most amazing thing I have ever seen in my entire life. |

Catalonia has a different feel than the rest of Spain and Barcelona is unique in Catalonia. Perhaps it is the uplifting contribution of Gaudi's architecture or the Catalonian people; whatever it is, Barcelona is one of the best places to visit in Spain. Start your visit with a walk down La Rambla, then, see the Sagrada Familia, and the Barcelona Cathedral. Take in as much of the city and as many of Gaudi's monuments as possible.
Madrid is a remarkable city. The "must sees" of the city are Old Madrid, the Museo del Prado, and the Palacio Real. Make no mistake, the museums, architecture, dining, and entertainment in Madrid are spectacular.
just check out this site, gives wonderful details :
