through their computer they can get an acount with a US phone number that allows them to call the US for free (same as if they lived here) however it will cost them the same as calling from the US to europe if they make a call to Europe while they are there. Have them use land lines for calling Europe a phone throught their computer to call you here |

I would suggest that the person travelling buy a calling card. They can use these anywhere but they might have to activate it before they leave and get a special dialing code. I bought mine at COSTCO and it was a great deal. Saved me ALOT of money on telephone calls from Italy. I was able to call from my hotel rooms - but check with the front desk or read the materials they provide at the hotel to see if they charge for calls.
Now, for the unlucky people left at home (!), I would leave them with your itinerary and the hotels that they can reach you at. It's always a good idea to leave contact numbers just in case they need to get a hold of you.
Check out this site for tips on calling to / from Europe and a list of the country codes: http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/tips/phonechart.htm
Of course, there are Internet cafes all over the place in Europe so you can always keep in touch via the Internet. Designate specific times to log on and you can CHAT. You don't get to hear each other's voice... but still effective in keeping in touch. |

If you are online a lot I would recommend trying the yahoo!messenger call facility. If your friends and family are logged in at the same time as you you will be able to see and call them through this.
I spent a year in Italy and Spain and would agree that although you can cheaply get a mobile phone with sim cards for the different countries, you are best to use the discount call cards if you want to have a good chat regularly. There are some excellent deals so compare prices first.
Have a great time out there! |

I am studying and Europe, and I found the best and cheapest way to talk to the US is through a program on the computer called Skype. Just go to skype.com and download the program, and if both people in the US and Europe have the program, you just have to use a headset (or some type of microphone and head phones) and you can talk for free. The connection is great too. Also, if only one party downloads Skype it is only $.02 a minute to talk to the US. I call home anytime I want and talk for 45 minutes and it only costs about a dollar. It is a little more expensive to call cell phones, but still incredibly cheap. |
