I used to live in the outskirts of Barcelona in a student flat, 4 years ago, I paid the equivalent of £64 a month (very cheap, taking into account I now live in a small town in the UK and pay £500 a month for a tiny little flat in pretty bad conditions!). Someone said a pint is £2, no way! Only if you go to the center of the most touristic areas you'll pay that. In the places where people actually live, you can pay as little as 1 euro (which is not even a pound!) and you can get 3 course meals at lunch time for less than £4 (6 euros), even if you go to a side street of Las Ramblas, right in the center of Barcelona city, you might be able to find this kind of prices (I admit you need to be lucky and know you way around it, though).
Remember, the prices you see when you go to Spain on holidays, are usually much higher than the real prices the locals pay (some locals wouldn't be able to afford the prices so many tourists think are bargains).
Saying that, it's also true that prices are going up very quickly, they've rocketed since the arrival of the Euro, and they are still going up.
House prices are very high compared to 10 years ago, and I've noticed that buying clothes and shoes in Spain is the same price as in the UK.

I briefly lived in the center of Barcelona. A single room in a shared apartment can be from EUR 200 to EUR 400, depending on location, size of room, and number of people sharing the apartment. Groceries ran me about EUR 25 per week, and I ate out frequently for about EUR 20 per dinner. A monthly transport pass in Barcelona is about EUR 40. In general, I think you can live in any Spanish city (very economically) for about EUR 750 per month, but if you want to enjoy life and experience new things you need more money.

A 3 course meal can cost from £12.00 - what ever you want to pay.
A pint of larger = £2.00,
