I went to Mallorca last summer. It was beautiful. You must see the Flamenco dancers. I had only visited Barcelona previously, so the city of Palma de Mallorca was pretty mellow. There is a very large and beautiful cathedral-which is a major attraction. Then we got a taxi driver to take us to some nearby towns (same price as renting a car.) We visited Sóller (samll town with a beach and shops), Deia (all built on the side of the mountain) great scenery. All of the road and direction signs were in the local language Mallorquín--not to be confused with Catalán. But everyone basically speaks Spanish. Ask some locals or your taxi driver where you can find some good paella (Spanish rice dish) and have fun!

The Balearic Islands ... what fun. The languages that are spoken are Spanish, Catalan, Basque, Galician. You should be able to get by with a little Spanish. As the islands are consumed by party goers and sunseekers in the summer months, I'm sure English is spoken as well. If you don't already know Spanish, do yourself a favour and learn a couple of key phrases and words. These go a long way! Check out http://www.smartphrase.com/Spanish/spanish.shtml

For festivals check out http://www.red2000.com/spain/baleares/fest.html

¡Buen viaje!

Well, luckily you don't need to learn Galician nor Basque if you go to the Balearic Islands, as the only 2 native languages spoken there are Catalan and Spanish. But there are lots of German and British people there as well, so you can speak in English and German in the touristic areas with no problem.
