Cold, in the thirty's or forty's, but varies. I pass the last Christmas in Spain and for my surprise the temperature in Barcelona was more colder than in Madrid. Madrid is a beautiful city in winter but it can be very crowd near the end of the year.

Madrid has a quite varied climate...very hot in summer, and cold and often damp in winter. This year we are having a drought, so there is not much humidity in the air....If it lasts we'll have a dry cold winter. If the drought ends, we should have rain in the winter...and snow in the mountain areas. It is usually cold, but hardly ever freezes over...
Hope you enjoy your visit...Madrid is a beautiful city...

The rain in Spain does not stay in the plain. It is on the meseta where Madrid is and frightfully cold. So is NY and that's magical at Christmas, so don't let that deter you. If you are looking for a wonderful Christmas experience in Europe I recommend the Christmas Markets of Germany and leave Spain to better weather. If you want Spain, it is one of my favorite countries in the world and shouldn't be missed. Don't expect a Christmas fiasco like in the US however. Chrsitmas is family time and traditional for those who celebrate it. Though Spain isn't especially pious, church is well attended during the holidays.
