Well ithink the first answer has it all really.

And the city of Malaga itself has a very very small number of expats actually.

In the province of malaga you will find at coastal resorts such as fuengirola and nearby towns have a large number of expats.

But the city is truly beautiful, go and discover the old part of town and take a good camera! oh and dont take a hire car into the city, park at a centro commercial before and get a taxi in for 10 euros. Driving in malaga is a nightmare.

Imakikas answer is perfect for Malaga itelf as a city.
However if you also mean for "around" to include the rest of the province...you have all the Costa del Sol to the west... Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, Estepona, etc. Then there are the Grottoes at Nerja, east of Málaga. Also east of Malaga is Vélez-Málaga, and the villages of La Axarquía, such as Frigiliana or Cómpeta, where the best malaga raisins and sweet wines come from. There are Aquaparks both in Torremolinos and Fuengirola. A zoo in Fuengirola and SELWO Safari Park in Estepona. An Aquarium and SELWO Marina are both in Benálmadena, as is TIVOLI amusement park. Across from the entrance to Tivoli you will find cable cars that go to the top of the peak behind the park, where you will find a show with birds of prey and other attractions. Up in Benalmádena Pueblo there are beautiful views of the coast and quaint streets to visit. In Mijas Pueblo, you will find La Ermita de la Virgen de La Peña, a small chapel carved in the rock.... The famous burro taxis, the church of La Inmaculada with its lovely wooden ceiling, the auditorium across from it, and nearby the Mirador with its lovely gardens. The main streets with their shops and restaurats... And if you visit it in the morning go into the town hall building, the inside is quite lovely. Then there is Marbella, with its famous Puerto Banús. The bonsai museum, the old town with its Plaza de Los Naranjos, the port area, and many other things worth seeing... Including a great shopping center "LA CAÑADA". And not to forget... Ronda with its famous bullring, El Tajo, etc.
Here is a website with info on the whole area....

Wow! imakika really has Málaga down! Very exhaustive list of what's in Málaga.

Also, tons of tiny little typical Andaluz towns to explore, if you want to get out of town...Ronda is my particular favorite, also: the Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos, and Granada isn't terribly far away, depending on how long you are planning to stay and if you want some day trips
