ANCIENT Toledo? As in during Roman times? It was Roman! They founded the city!
Before the Romans...I'm pretty sure it was a bunch of shepherds ruled by one stronger shepherd.
Actually, Medieval Toledo has some pretty fascinating history!
Try searching Toledo...you should be able to find all sorts of information, things to do, etc.
El Greco made his home there, and his home, and many of his masterpieces are on display in various parts of the city.
Toledo was one of the only cities in Spain where the three major religions coexisted for a long time, that they lived in harmony, and peace, and didn't ghettoize each other. There are two restored Synagogues, one of which (El TrĂ¡nsito) has as HUGE museum of Jewish History (in Spain) and both are spectacular.
As with any city in Spain, there's the Cathedral. Gotta see it.
One of the most famous paintings by El Greco is called Vista de Toledo (view of Toledo) - actually, there are two different such paintings. One thing to do is get up where he painted them, and make your own copy (photographically, of course, for most of us, but if you like to paint...paint one!) of it!
Tons of great little corners...check with the tourist site for food specialties, other things to do.
I just don't understand your government question. |

Toledo was ruled by Rome, then was capital of the Visigoths, then ruled by Moors, then Spanish (Castillians). In addition to Kate J 's answer there is the El Greco painting Burial of Count Orgaz in Church San Tome. |
